Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live coverage of the first One-Day International (ODI) between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday. This is Amit Banerjee, and I shall be presenting the live updates of the match in collaboration with Bhaskar Narayan. New Zealand start as favourites ahead of the start of play, especially after they whitewashed the listless visitors 2-0 in the recently-concluded Test series to continue their unbeaten Test streak on home soil. Among the major news ahead of the first ODI is that of Lasith Malinga’s unavailability for the first two games. LIVE CRICKET SCORECARD: New Zealand vs Sri Lanka 2015-16, 1st ODI at Christchurch

MATCH REPORT

Player of the match: Matt Henry (right-arm fat-medium bowler of New Zealand)

Henry took four wickets giving 49 runs in his 10 overs; he also bowled a maiden. (10-1-49-4)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: New Zealand 191/3 | Overs 21 | Target 189 | New Zealand win by 7 wickets with 174 balls left | BATTING: Ross Taylor 5(9), Henry Nicholls 23(21): Martin Guptill tries to hit Siriwardana over long-off region but finds Nuwan Kulasekara. Guptill is dismissed after a well played 79 off just 56 deliveries. Henry Nicholls comes to the middle and makes his intentions clear by hitting only the third ball he faced for a boundary. Siriwardana pitches a short ball outside off, Nicholls latches on it and cuts it over the covers. Dilshan then bowls a quite 18th over giving just three runs. Nicholls slams two consecutive boundaries on the first two balls of the next over bowled by Ajantha Mendis. A few  singles and doubles follow in the next few balls. He ends the game in style by carting the last two deliveries of the 21st over, again by Mendis for boundaries. First four was executed through a pull shot and the next towards the backward point off a short ball. Finally, New Zealand chase down Sri Lanka’s paltry score of 188. They take a seven wicket victory with 174 balls remaining; a thumping victory for the Kiwis. They go one up in the five-match ODI series. OUT! Martin Guptill c Nuwan Kulasekara b Milinda Siriwardana 79(56)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: New Zealand 164/2 | Overs 16.2 | Target 189 | Requirement 25 runs off 202 balls | BATTING: Martin Guptill 79(55), Ross Taylor 2(3): Tillakartne Dilshan cleans up Tom Latham for 18 runs. A tossed up delivery and Latham tries to hit an aerial shot over mid-on but fails to make contact, he is bowled. Ross Taylor has come to the crease now and opens his account on the first ball he faces. New Zealand now need 25 runs in 202 balls with eight wickets in hand. Martin Guptill is unbeaten on 79 off just 55 balls. OUT! Tom Latham b Tillakartne Dilshan 18(15)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: New Zealand 135/1 | Overs 13 | Target 189 | Requirement 54 runs off 222 balls | BATTING: Martin Guptill 65(46), Tom Latham 9(7): McCullum departs after a quickfire 55. He advanced down the track on a ball bowled by left-arm spinner Milinda Siriwardana and wanted to hit a big shot towards the covers but fails to get the ball in the middle of his bat. A slice scurries the ball towards backward point where Suranga Lakmal makes no mistake. Tom Latham has come to the middle after the dismissal of McCullum. Martin Guptill is in no mood to slow down. Batting on 65, he has already carted six boundaries and four shots for the maximum. OUT! Brendon McCullum c Suranga Lakmal b Milinda Siriwardana 55(25)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: New Zealand 100/0 | Overs 9.2 | Target 189 | Requirement 89 runs off 244 balls | BATTING: Brendon McCullum 55(24), Martin Guptill 41(32): Brendon McCullum has slammed a beautiful half century and in quick time. He got to his fifty in style by hitting a four off Ajantha Mendis towards the covers. He took just 23 balls to reach his half century. Martin Guptill is batting at a fast pace too; he has reached 41 in just 32 deliveries. Sri Lankans have to bowl accurately; they have already bowled four wides. It’s only the 10th over and Sri Lanka’s skipper Angelo Mathews has already tried six bowlers. Kiwis have reached the 100-run mark in just 56 deliveries. We can anticipate they want to finish off the game in no time. They now require only 89 runs from 40.4 overs. Cakewalk for them, unless the islanders come up with some miracle.

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: New Zealand 30/0 | Overs 4 | Target 189 | Requirement 159 runs off 276 balls | BATTING: Brendon McCullum 18(12), Martin Guptill 10(13): New Zealand are off to a flyer thanks to Brendon McCullum’s early onslaught. He has already struck two back to back boundaries off Lakmal and one through the covers off Kulasekara. He is well supported by Martin Guptill at the other end. New Zealand now require 159 runs from 276 deliveries with all 10 wickets intact.

INNINGS BREAK

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: Sri Lanka 188 in 47 overs; BATTING: Dushmantha Chameera 6(22): OUT! Mendis offers simple catching practice to Ronchi, who takes his third catch of the innings, off a short-pitched delivery by McClenaghan in the 42nd over. Chameera and Lakmal however, block the deliveries over the next few overs resiliently, aiming to bat the remaining overs out. Lakmal cops a nasty blow on his head off a short ball from Bracewell, getting hit on the backside of his helmet while attempting a pull (in an eerily similar fashion to Phil Hughes’s tragic incident). Lakmal takes a while to recover from the blow, and goes for another pull in the next delivery, but Latham takes a fine catch at deep square-leg for Bracewell to take his third wicket and end the Sri Lankan innings.OUT! Ajantha Mendis c Luke Ronchi b Mitchell McClenaghan 4(8), Suranga Lakmal c Tom Latham b Doug Bracewell 8(9)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: Sri Lanka 164/8 in 40 overs; BATTING: Ajantha Mendis 1(2), Dushmantha Chameera 0(2): SIX! Kulasekara gets a length ball outside off, and launches it over long-on to get his third six of the innings. He completes his fourth ODI half-century in similar fashion, lifting the wide-pitched delivery off Santner in the 37th over towards long-off. SIX! And its Kula again! This time, he smashes the slower one from Henry over midwicket, his fifth six in the innings! The partnership is worth 96 at the end of the 38th over! OUT! The dream partnership between Siriwardana and Kulasekara comes to an end, with Bracewell getting rid of the former with an off-cutter. Siri attempts to launch the full-pitched ball along the middle-stump over mid-on, but gets a bottom-edge resulting in a catch for McCullum near mid-off. OUT! Luke Ronchi takes a blinder of a catch to dismiss Kulasekara for 58 off 73 balls off the bowling of McClenaghan. It’s all but over for the visitors now, losing their eighth wicket with 164 on board. OUT! Milinda Siriwardana c Brendon McCullum b Doug Bracewell 66(82), Nuwan Kulasekara c Luke Ronchi b Mitchell McClenaghan 58(73)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: Sri Lanka 137/6 in 35 overs; BATTING: Milinda Siriwardana 62(72), Nuwan Kulasekara 36(57):  Siriwardana and Kulasekara have gone quiet since completing the fifty-partnership, and score a mere seven runs in the next three overs. Meanwhile, Kulasekara is batting in the 30s, and will be aiming for his half-century soon. FOUR! Henry returns to the attack, and is dispatched by Siriwardana through extra-cover off a full-length delivery pitched outside off. Siriwardana moves to 60, his highest ODI score by a margin.

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: Sri Lanka 119/6 in 30 overs; BATTING: Milinda Siriwardana 52(59), Nuwan Kulasekara 29(40): FOUR! Kulasekara is showing signs of him being a useful batsman lower down the order, at a stage when his team desperately needs him to fire. Pierces the gap between extra-cover and mid-on off the fullish delivery pitched outside off to score his first boundary of the innings. SIX! Kulasekara gets down on one knee and smashes the final ball of the 27th over over midwicket for his 2nd six as well as to bring up the 100 for his team. Sri Lanka have progressed well with these two at the crease, and the partnership between the two is currently worth over 40. FOUR! Beautiful drive from Kulasekara off a half-volley pitched outside off by McClenaghan. The ball pierces extra-cover with ease! Meanwhile, Kulasekara completes the 50-run partnership with Siriwardana in 71 deliveries, while Siriwardana pulls beautifully in the fourth delivery towards midwicket to bring up his 2nd ODI fifty with a four, taking 56 balls to reach the mark! The visitors seem to have recovered well by now!

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: Sri Lanka 89/6 in 25 overs; BATTING: Milinda Siriwardana 40(48), Nuwan Kulasekara 11(21): Adam Milne returns to the attack for the 21st over, with Siriwardana being the only batsman left for Black Caps to target at the moment. Siriwardana is playing at run-a-ball pace at the moment, and looks set to complete his half-century shortly. SIX! Kulasekara gets the first big hit of the Sri Lankan innings, timing the pull off the short-pitched Bracewell delivery in the 23rd over to send the ball over deep midwicket! Black Caps skipper McCullum finally introduces spin in the 25th over by handing the ball over to Mitchell Santner, who concedes three off the over, with Siriwardana moving to 40 at the end of the over!

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: Sri Lanka 72/6 in 20 overs; BATTING: Milinda Siriwardana 35(35), Nuwan Kulasekara 0(4): Doug Bracewell is introduced into the attack in the 16th over, and is dispatched through cover by Siriwardana for the latter to bring up his fourth boundary of the innings. Kapugedera gets into the act as well at the start of the next over, punching the delivery off McClenaghan pitched outside off through cover for his first boundary. Meanwhile the partnership between Siriwardana and Kapugedera is blossoming, and will be crucial for the visitors. OUT! Bracewell does it for the hosts, breaking the partenrship after Kapugedera drives the fourth ball of the 17th over, pitched well outside off, straight to Santner at cover! Nuwan Kulasekara is the new batsman at the crease, as Sri Lankan momentum being broken. FOUR! Siriwardana moves to 35 after getting an inside edge off Bracewell, with the ball running away towards deep fine-leg. OUT! Chamara Kapugedera c Mitchell Santner b Doug Bracewell 8(24)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: Sri Lanka 48/5 in 15 overs; BATTING: Milinda Siriwardana 18(16), Chamara Kapugedera 2(17): Siriwardana punches the second ball of the 12th over over point for a much-needed boundary, one that would bring some relief to the beseiged Sri Lankans. Beautiful shot off a short delivery outside off. CONSECUTIVE FOURS! Siriwardana is giving it back to Henry in style, driving the full-length fourth ball pitched outside off through extra cover for the second four of the over to move to 9. New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum finally opts for a bowling change, introducing Mitchell McClenaghan for the 13th over in place of Milne. Dropped! Siriwardana pulls ambitiously towards midwicket, where Nicholls fails to hold on to the catch after sliding too early. He however, sends the third ball of the over mid-on for his third boundary!

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: Sri Lanka 27/5 in 10 overs; BATTING: Milinda Siriwardana 0(1), Chamara Kapugedera 2(2): The two Henrys combine forces to remove the dangerous Dilshan for 9, with Sri Lanka losing their second wicket with 20 on board. Dilshan attempts to slice a back-of-length delivery towards midwicket, but ends up skieing the ball, with debutant Nicholls collecting the catch at midwicket. The eighth over of the Sri Lankan innings is an eventful one, with Matt Henry removing Thirimanne and skipper Angelo Mathews off consecutive deliveries to reduce Sri Lanka to 23/4 at the end of the eighth over. The fourth ball straightens along the leg-stump line before hitting Thirimanne on the front pad, while Mathews edges a slightly short-of-length delivery to the slips, where Latham dives to his left to complete a fine catch. The hosts are all over the visitors at the moment, and the Sri Lankans need a strong partnership at this stage to save themselves. Henry takes his fourth wicket of the innings when Chandimal edges the fourth ball, which is a fullish delivery pitched slightly outside off, to the slips where Ross Taylor completes the catch.  OUT! Tillakaratne Dilshan c Henry Nicholls b Matt Henry 9(10), Lahiru Thirimanne lbw Matt Henry 1(19), Angelo Mathews c Tom Latham b Matt Henry 0(1), Dinesh Chandimal c Ross Taylor b Matt Henry 5(16)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE: Sri Lanka 20/1 in 5 overs; BATTING: Tillakaratne Dilshan 9(9), Lahiru Thirimanne 1(10): Youngster Gunathilaka scores the first run as well as the first boundary of the innings, smashing the fourth ball of the second over over mid-off off Henry’s bowling. He is removed in the next over by Milne, after getting a bit of a nick in the fourth delivery. Ronchi collects the ball and appeals for the catch along with the rest of the team, though the umpire initially turns the appeal down. The Black Caps successfully manage to review the decision, with Gunathilaka departing after scoring eight off 11 balls. OUT! Danushka Gunathilaka c Luke Ronchi b Adam Milne 8(11)

TOSS: Sri Lanka win the toss and elect to bat.

Teams:

New Zealand: Brendon McCullum (c), Martin Guptill, Henry Nicholls, Tom Latham, Ross Taylor, Mitchell Santner, Luke Ronchi (wk), Doug Bracewell, Adam Milne, Matt Henry, Mitchell McClenaghan.

Sri Lanka: Danushka Gunathilaka, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dinesh Chandimal (wk), Lahiru Thirimanne, Angelo Mathews (c), Milinda Siriwardana, Chamara Kapugedera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Dushmantha Chameera, Suranga Lakmal, Ajantha Mendis.

The Sri Lankan pace spearhead is currently suffering from a problematic right knee that he sustained against West Indies last month, and is in doubt for the rest of the series. Malinga’s absence from the first two games leaves a major chunk of responsibility on the shoulders of Nuwan Pradeep, who is currently spearheading the attack, as well as the likes of Dushmantha Chameera, who was impressive in the second Test with his haul of nine for 115. Chameera needs to carry his form over to the ODIs from the second Test if he is to seal his spot in the side. PREVIEW: New Zealand vs Sri Lanka 2015-16, 1st ODI at Christchurch

The New Zealand camp is not without their share of problems, with leading batsman Kane Williamson’s availability for the first one-dayer currently doubtful. Williamson has been in stupendous form with the bat in recent Tests, averaging 86 in the five Tests in the last two series’ against Australia and Sri Lanka respectively, including three centuries and as many fifties. Tom Latham has been called in as the standby player in case he misses out on the first one-dayer.

Squads:

New Zealand: Brendon McCullum (c), Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Mitchell Santner, George Worker, Luke Ronchi (wk), Doug Bracewell, Mitchell McClenaghan, Adam Milne, Ish Sodhi, Matt Henry (first two ODIs), Tim Southee (3rd ODI).

Sri Lanka: Angelo Mathews (c), Lahiru Thirimanne, Dushmantha Chameera, Dinesh Chandimal (wk), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Nuwan Pradeep, Danushka Gunathilaka, Chamara Kapugedera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga, Ajantha Mendis, Sachithra Senanayake, Milinda Siriwardana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Kithuruwan Vithanage, Thisara Perera.
