New Zealand see out the day. Tom Latham and skipper Brendon McCullum survive both spin and pace. On Tuedsay the Kiwis have an uphil task on their hands. Their first task will be to avoid the follow-on. Will they be able to do that? The Pakistanis bowlers had all the Australians all at sea. Will New Zealand suffer the same fate?

Pakistan keep on piling up the runs. All the batsmen in this innings have crossed the fifty-run mark. Both the spinners, Mark Craig and Ish Sodhi have gone for more than hundred runs. To make matters worse their fielding has not been upto their usual standards. Pakistan on the other hand have been ruthless.

Pakistan will look to be more aggressive now. Misbah is six short of his fifty. He has shown signs of being aggressive in the session. He survived a dropped chance. Anderson started off things for the Kiwis. Only one run from more the first after tea. Misbah takes the aerial route but the ball does not get to the boundary. It stops just before there.

Tea Day 2: Another good session for the hosts Pakistan. New Zealand seem to be going through the motions as Pakistan take control of the game. There was plenty of shoddy work in the field. They dropped Misbah twice and there was plenty of misfields as well. Younis has been at his usual best as he has completed yet another Test fifty. These two have started to accelerated giving an indication that the declaration is round the corner.

Misbah ul Haq is going on the attack. Is he intent on declaring soon? Younis Khan has kept the scoreboard ticking constantly. It’s been another luckless session for New Zealand. Dropped chances have made things worse for them.

Azhar Ali clean bowled by Ish Sodhi. Azhar was in two minds how to play that as the ball spun away and knocked the bails off. Misbah ul Haq comes in. Pakistan are still in a very good position.

Ish Sodhi and Corey Anderson continue. Azhar Ali still continues in the same vein. The wicket seems a tad slow. Playing the pull has not been that easy. Anderson follows a short delivery with a yorker. The New Zealand medium pacer induces an edge off Younis Khan.

Ish Sodhi starts off things after lunch. They need another batsman out fast.  Both Azhar Ali and Younis Khan are in very good form. Younis Khan is on his way with a four, a glide that as the ball by Corey Anderson drifts toward the leg-side. The left-arm seamer has mixed it up, thrown in the occasional bouncer while bowling off cutters here and there.

Lunch, Day 2: Pakistan were cruising along before Shehzad had to deal with a nasty bouncer that he couldn’t keep out. But the session clearly belongs to Pakistan. They scored 78 runs in this session. New Zealand bowlers looked clueless against Ali and Shehzad.

OUT! Ahmed Shehzad hit wicket just before Lunch. Pakistan 347/2 after 115.5 overs. Ahmed Shehzad is out but he looks in gruesome pain. A sharp bouncer from Anderson that hits Shehzad between the grill and the helmet as he looked to play the pull, Shehzad looked in a lot of pain straightaway as  his bat fell back onto the stumps. He is still sitting on the pitch as the physio is looking after him. Pakistan’s Mr Consistent, Younis Khan will come to the  crease.

The 150-run stand stand between Shehzad and Azhar comes up. New Zealand have to make a breakthrough here. The other spinner Ish Sodhi has also been brought on.  Shehzad is batting very well. Azhar has held the other end up too. Some luck for Azhar there as Sodhi’s delivery misses the stumps by not much.

Still no success for the Kiwis. Brendon McCullum has tried quite a things, at times even employing a short cover and short mid on. His fields at times have resembled a One-Day field but it has not brought about the desired result. Some short stuff by Southee there but no success yet. Azhar Ali has shown a lot of resilience while Shehzad is continuing from he left off on Sunday.

Shehzad has crossed the 150-run mark. Still no success for New Zealand. Things are looking ominous for the New Zealand bowlers. Shehzad is set for a huge score. He’s beginning to score quickly against the spinner Craig. At the other end Azhar Ali is batting well too. Southee has begun to bowl from round the wicket now. Raps Shehzad on the pads but the ball has pitched outside the leg-stump.

Good beginning by Pakistan here. No alarms. Both batsman look as if they want to occupy the crease for some time. The spinner Mark Craig has not had much of an impact so far. Southee switches ends. He may be is looking for reverse swing. Might be a little early for that. Southee has drifted down the leg-side occasionally. A maiden by Southee. What can New Zealand do produce a breakthrough on this docile pitch? Craig still in action. He’s kept it around the off-stump.

Not a lot of action so far. Spin in the form of Mark Craig has been introduced. Shehzad goes after Craig. He comes down the wicket and hit the ball over long on. A wonderful shot that.  Boult continues from round the wicket. Not a lot of purchase for him. Both the batsman look as if they want bat for a long, long time on this very docile pitch.

A circumspect approach by both Shehzad and Azhar. Boult at times has gone round the wicket and tried to dart the ball into the batsmen. His partner Southee has kept it very full and has made the batsmen play constantly. He, however, has drifted onto the leg at times. Azhar has brought up his fifty. The two batsmen have been very solid.

First over of Day two. Boult to start off proceedings. Azhar to take strike. He lets the first one go. Boult runs in, the ball’s drifting toward the leg-side. Azhar hits it away for two. No runs off the remaining deliveries.

Ahmed Shehzad and Azhar Ali stride out. The two would be looking to consolidate initially and then open up. A lot depends on Southee, the leader of this bowling attack. The Kiwis would dearly hope he can produce an early breakthrough.

The pitch on Day 2 still looks a terrific one for batting. Shehzad would be looking to add as many as he can to his 126. The in-form Younis Khan is in in next. Then comes Misbah ul Haq. At present Pakistan hold the aces.

New Zealand need to remove Ahmed Shehzad and Azhar Ali early if they are to make an impression on Day 2 of the opening Test at Abu Dhabi. They could be staring at a long day in the field if either Shehzad or Azhar continue. The Kiwis will have to take all their chances today.

Pakistan had a brilliant opening day of the first Test of the three match series against New Zealand at Abu Dhabi. Opener Ahmed Shehzad hit a brilliant hundred to steer Pakistan to 269 for one at close on the day one. Shehzad was batting on 126 for his third Test hundred — all made this year — but fellow opener Mohammad Hafeez missed his by four runs as New Zealand’s pace-cum spin attack toiled hard on an unresponsive pitch at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

Azhar Ali was unbeaten on 46, having added 91 for the unbroken second wicket stand with Shehzad. It was another display of batting domination by Pakistan after Brendon McCullum called wrongly at the toss and his counterpart Misbah-ul Haq took no time in opting to bat, as he did in the 356-run mauling of Australia in the second Test at the same venue last week.  On Day 2 the hosts would like to continue their good work and put a good first innings score, whereas the Kiwis need quick wickets to get back in the game, PTI reported.
