Railways started their tournament with a humiliating innings defeat at Mohali: Punjab piled up 604 for 5 before bowling them out for 196 and 282. Another innings defeat followed at Vadodara when Baroda scored 500 and bowled them out for 166 and 221. But just when it seemed Railways would sink without a trace, they turned things around in spectacular fashion at Ghaziabad. Ashish Singh slammed a hundred and three others crossed 40 as Railways put up 375. A five-for from Ranjit Mali secured a 74-run lead before Railways set Uttar Pradesh 341, Ashish adding 60 more to his tally. Then came the shock of the season, when Anureet and Krishnakant Upadhyay skittled out Uttar Pradesh for a mere 58.

Gujarat, on the other hand, conceded a first-innings lead to Andhra at Vizianagram despite Parthiv s 122 and 50*, and Rush Kalaria s 5 for 55. Parthiv scored 113 at Mohali as well (Rao and Priyank Panchal also came off with the bat), but Gujarat s 467 was overhauled by Punjab s 608. They will be keen on getting at least 3 points from the bout.
