Good Morning and welcome to CricketCountry’s live coverage of the Ranji Trophy 2016-17, Day 3! This tournament is an ideal platform for the young guns to showcase their talent on a grand stage and make a mark. A total of 13 matches in the Round 2 have started at the Ranji Trophy season 2016-17 which is being played between 26 teams. The round 1 has already been concluded where most the matches have ended up in draw while the some had nail-biting results. Baroda, Gujarat, Saurashtra, Rajasthan, Odisha, Vidarbha, Haryana, Services, Kerela, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Andhra saw their matches ending in draw. Read More about Ranji Trophy

The Day two saw various things happening throughout the 13 matches that are going on. The Day One was dominated by bowlers as we saw various bowlers winding up their opposition team within a few overs. But the Day Two saw completely opposite of what we have seen in the first Day of the Round 2 of the Ranji Trophy 2016-17. The standout performance of  day was witnessed at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

Swapnil Gugale and Ankit Bawne of Maharashtra made a record breaking partnership of 594 for the third wicket in their first innings of the Round 2 of the Ranji Trophy 2016-17. The record of highest partnership in First-Class cricket is held by Sri Lanka’s legendary batsmen pair of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene who together had put up 624 runs stand against South Africa in 2006 for the 3rd wicket.

Maharashtra declared their innings at 635 for the loss of 2 wickets which came in as an utter shock as it was very much expected that these two would go for the world record. By the time when Maharashtra declared their innings. Gugale had scored an unbeaten knock of 351 while his partner Bawne was on the score of 258 not out. Maharashtra opener Swapnil Gugale has looked unperturbed as he along with Bawne broke the record of highest partnership in Ranji Trophy as they surpassed 581 runs for any wicket in Ranji Trophy. The previous record was of Vijay Hazare and Gul Mohammad who had put up a partnership of 577 runs in the Ranji Trophy 1946-47 for the fourth wicket.

Winning the toss, Maharashtra opted to bat first as skipper Gugale opened the innings along with Harshad Khadiwale who got dismissed very early in the game as he could score only 10. Maharashtra lost their second wicket in quick succession as Chirag Khurana who too was sent back to the dugout by Navdeep Saini for just 4 runs. Saini was the only successful bowler for Delhi as he picked up both the wickets. Since then, Bawne who walked in at No. 3 has picked up the pace of the batting and have scored runs freely without any awkwardness. Gugale has already scored 350 in is playing the anchor role in this record-breaking partnership.

Delhi has used a total of 9 bowlers till now and all their efforts have proved futile as none of this has helped. It seemed like both Gugale and Bawne could definitely aim for the all-time highest partnership record which has been set up Sri Lanka’s legendary. Delhi came in to bat for 5 overs in which they have scored 21 runs for the loss of 0 wickets. They have openers Unmukt Chand and Mohit Sharma at the crease with the scores of 4 and 14 respectively.

In the other match of Punjab vs Madhya Pradesh, in Round 2 of Ranji Trophy 2016-17, Ishwar Pandey wreaked havoc of Punjab’s batting order with an astonishing eight-wicket haul. Winning the toss, Madhya Pradesh invited Punjab to bat first but were in for a shock as Punjab’s kipper, Yuvraj Singh, along with Gurkeerat Mann stood tall for their side and helped themselves to their respective hundreds. Pandey started Punjab’s downfall early in the innings with early blows which pegged back Punjab’s run flow. Punjab were tottering at 15 for 2 at one stage when Yuvraj came into bat and stitched a 170-run stand with opener, Jiwanjot Singh and went to add another 156 runs for the fourth wicket with Gurkeerat. Pandey’s outburst with the ball on Day Two dismissed Punjab for 378 while Madhya Pradesh are batting at 182 for 5, trailing Punjab by 196 runs.

From Punjab’s point of view, Manpreet Singh Grewal picked up four wickets to dent Madhya Pradesh’s run-scoring. His regular breakthroughs harmed Madhya Pradesh’s progress and enabled Punjab to get ahead in the game. Manpreet dismissed Aditya Shrivastava, Rajat Patidar, Devendra Bundela and Harpreet Singh Bhatia. Pandey’s menacing spell, getting the big guns out such as Yuvraj, Mandeep Singh and Gurkeerat, gave Madhya Pradesh early honours but their batsmen have remained lackluster. Yuvraj’s side fell like nine pins after his blistering 177-run knock if shows how much dependent Punjab were on their skipper.

Rajasthan finished the day at 208 for 3. Rajasthan now have a lead of 13 runs over Assam after the latter were dismissed for a paltry score of 195. The day started with Rajasthan looking for a big total to build a big lead over Assam’s 195. Rajasthan were slow in their approach as runs were hard to come by but did not lose wickets. Vineet Saxena scored 30 off 146 balls but it was MK Lomror’s 84 (not out) along with Ashok Menaria’s 44 that held their innings throughout the day. Rajat Bhatia came out in the middle after Menaria got out and ended the day batting at 28.

The clash between debut team Chattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh has taken many twists and turns as the latter ended Day 2 in a precarious situation. Andhra Pradesh after choosing to field first have not done a good job with the bat on Day 2. Their  bowlers did a good job in getting early wickets on Day 2 and restricted the side to a decent total of 394. A Khare scored a brilliant ton and steered his side to a dominating position while Abhimanyu Chauhan too stepped up and smashed 123. Siva Kumar had four scalps to his name while Stephen and Ayyappa Bandaru had couple of wicket each to their name. Bhargav Bhatt also chipped in with a wicket while G H Vihari also contributed with one
