CyBuxLOXUAALr-EHello, and welcome to CricketCountry’s live cricket blog and updates from the Ranji Trophy 2016-17 quarter-final stage. Eight teams from three groups advanced to India’s principal domestic tournament, wherein intense cricket was witnessed throughout the league round. Four matches of the Ranji Trophy 2016-17 quarter-final began on Friday, with Hyderabad taking on the 41-time Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai, Tamil Nadu defeating Karnataka and advancing to the next stage, Gujarat taking on the team from Odisha and Haryana facing Jharkhand in this round. All the remaining matches are being played at neutral venues,  with a new experiment being done by BCCI to negate the home advantage that host teams tend to take.

In the match between Mumbai and Hyderabad, Mumbai have extended their lead to 116 runs, thanks to Aditya Tare and Praful Waghela’s 50-run stand. Both these batsmen resurrected their fallen innings as Mumbai team was struggling at 52 for the loss of 3 wickets at one stage. As we get into the final stage of the quarter-final, Tare and Waghela will resume batting from 39 and 27. The 41-times Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai had earlier taken a slender lead of 14 runs in the first innings.

In the other match between Gujarat and Odisha, Gujarat batsman Priyank Panchal achieved new high by scoring as many as 1,120 runs, becoming only the sixth highest run-scorer in a season. Playing in his 51st First-Class match, Panchal has amassed 3,341 runs, including 10 hundred and 12 half-centuries. However, former India batsman VVS Laxman still tops the list with 1,415 runs in 1999-2000, followed by Shreyas Iyer (1,321 runs in 2015-16). Before the ongoing quarter-final, Panchal was at the 10th spot. His scores of 2 and 81 propelled him above Ajinkya Rahane, putting his team in a commanding position with a lead of 310 at the end of Day Three.

With all these interesting happenings, Ranji Trophy 2016-17 is turning out to be yet another cracker-of-a-season.
