Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live cricket blog and updates from the Ranji Trophy 2016-17 semi-finals. After almost three months of intense action, we have finally reached to the final-four stage, with defending champions Mumbai clashing against Tamil Nadu, dark horses Jharkhand and batting powerhouse Gujarat, the only remaining teams in the fray. New Year could not have begun in in a better manner with Mumbai already beginning their bid to the final reducing Tamil Nadu to 261 for 6 at Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) ground in Rajkot while Gujarat ruling Day One with Priyank Panchal once again continuing his dream run with score of 144* taking his side to 283 for 3 against Jharkhand. Day Two will witness intense action between the four teams after Mumbai and Gujarat took the centre stage on Sunday.

Both the games are being held at neutral venues to avoid home advantages. Mumbai had a topsy-turvy journey to the semi-final and are yet to play their best in this tournament. Being the title holders, Mumbai have played on their strengths with bowlers like Shardul Thakur and Abhishek Nayar bagging quick wickets. Spinner Vijay Gohil also had something to cheer on on Day One. Tamil Nadu, found reasons to smile in intervals, with Kaushik Gandhi and Baba Indrajith the only batsmen with fifties, holding the game tight. After their dismissal, Tamil Nadu collapsed with Vijay Shankar and Aswin Crist playing on 41 and 9 respectively.

In the second clash, Gujarat’s Panchal has once again led his team to glory with score of 144 not out. With this score, Panchal has already gone past Mumbai’s Wasim Jaffer’s tally of 1,260 runs in a single Ranji Trophy season. Parthiv Patel also added commendable score of 62 off 116 deliveries before being dismissed by Jharkhand’s top bowler Kaushal Singh. The wicket came after Vikash Singh had already  taken two wickets to keep his side in race. Both teams will be itching to reach the final and claim their first Ranji title. Earlier in the day, Jharkhand  also had a pleasant surprise in store at Nagpur  as their hero MS Dhoni arrived in the city   to cheer  for his teammates during the match.

Tamil Nadu had a fabulous journey to the semi-final beating Karnataka. They will look to continue the momentum in the coming days. Their bowlers Crist, Thangarasu Natarajan and Krishnamoorthy Vignesh can pose threat to Mumbai. On the other hand, Mumbai will aim to rule yet another season with their composed all-round performance. They have picked youngster Prithvi Shaw, who had a fabulous year in 2016.

Mumbai had beaten Hyderabad in the quarter-final to reach the semi-final while Gujarat beat Odisha to reach this stage. Tamil Nadu, who possess players like Abhinav Mukund and Dinesh Karthik, found their way back on Day One. It all zeroes down to the bowlers. Meanwhile, Jharkhand have appeared in the semi-final for the first time and would not want to make any errors to lose out on this opportunity.
