Pakistan have already clinched the series 3-1, thanks to a dominant seven-wicket victory in the fourth one-dayer at Colombo, due to which the final one-dayer will be a dead rubber. A consolatory victory however, would help the hosts gain some confidence ahead of the Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) as well as the upcoming assignments against India. They have out played Pakistan in every way in this game. Though this is a consolation victory for them as Pakistan take the series 3-2. Meanwhile Pakistan after winning the series will remain ahead of West Indies in the ODI rankings, which means they should qualify for the Champions Trophy 2017 if there is no more ODI cricket until September 30. But West Indies are planning a five-match ODI series in Zimbabwe to increase their chances of qualification.

Sri Lanka have been consistently outplayed by Pakistan in both the Tests as well as the ODI series so far. The hosts have not been able to get their basics right, and skipper Angelo Mathews will have to endure a lot of fire for the same in the coming days. Looking back at the fourth ODI, Sri Lanka were rescued from getting bowled out on a lowly total by valuable fifties from Lahiru Thirimanne and Tillakaratne Dilshan. There are unlikely to be any sweeping changes in the side for Pakistan, though Sri Lanka might consider a few knee-jerk changes. The upcoming India series will play on skipper Mathews’ mind as well, so he will want a bit of momentum going into the Test series.
