Opener KL Rahul (72), Naman Ojha (52), Hardik Pandya (47) and Karun Nair (44) did the bulk of the scoring for the home side before being bowled out in 78.5 overs. For the visitors, Dale Steyn (3 for 46), Simon Harmer (3 for 41) and Vernon Philander (2 for 37) impressed, while Imran Tahir and Dane Piedt picked up one wicket each. In reply, Dean Elgar remained unbeaten on 18 as the visitors reached 46 for 2 in 8.2 overs at stumps on the first day. Earlier in the day, opting to bat first, opener Unmukt Chand (4) started the proceedings with a boundary off the third ball of the first over. But a superb delivery from Steyn just two balls later totally fooled the batsman to put the hosts at 4 for 1 inside the very first over.
