STUMPS!!!! Sri Lanka trail by 384 runs, with nine wickets in hand. An eventful day coming up on Monday. India very much in the driver’s seat and a win is certainly on the cards.

  • 4:07 PM IST
GONE!!!! What a start! the second ball of the innings, Samarawickrama chooses to leave, and the ball swings in just to clip the bails of the off stump, as he departs for an unfortunate duck. Certainly not the start that Sri Lanka wanted.
OUT! Sadeera Samarawickrama b Ishant Sharma 0
  • 3:55 PM IST

100 for Rohit! His third in his career as he celebrates in what has been a hard-fought ton in his Test career so far. Meanwhile, Kohli come up with the declaration, which means, India lead by 405.

  • 3:44 PM IST
GONE!!!! Ashwin depart for mere five after being bowled up by Dilruwan Perera, as India lead by 392. Not long before the declaration, while wicket loss at this stage is unlikely to hurt India.
OUT! Ravichandran Ashwin b Dilruwan Perera 5(

Kohli’s entertainment ends here at Nagpur. Attempting a six he perishes at long-on.

OUT! Virat Kohli c Lahiru Thirimanne b Dilruwan Perera 213 (267)
  • 3:14 PM IST

And Kohli does it again. 5th double hundred for the Indian skipper. How can one be so consistent? Well, I better not jinx it ahead of a flurry of overseas tours in the pipeline.

Kohli gets to the landmark with a single off Perera. On the other hand, Rohit is also nearing three figures. Will they declare after that? IND 566 for 4.
  • 2:12 PM IST

It’s Tea. Kohli is appraoching his fifth double century. Kohli and Rohit have added 97 for the fifth wicket. Rohit has been the aggressor as he slammed his eighth fifty.

  • 2:03 PM IST

Rohit registers his eighth fifty in Test cricket. He is playing a Test after over a year and it’s never easy making comebacks. He now has four fifties in as many Tests. Trollers, next time. This time, Rohit hasn’t given you a chance…

  • 1:24 PM IST

Rohit has now found is feet and is milking easy runs. He bludgeons two boundaries from the Herath over. I do not see India declaring anytime soon.

  • 1:03 PM IST

And that’s 150 for both — Perera and Kohli. Kohli charges out and clears long-on. Very good use of bottom hand. Perera has leaked runs in excess of 150 and Kohli continues to build his reputation as a run-monster.

  • 12:43 PM IST

Gamage has meanwhile damaged his ankle trying to stop a ball at mid-on. Not good news for Sri Lanka. He is limping and is being helped off the field. Lakmal comes into the attack and Kohli shows little respect by greeting him with a lofted boundary over long-off for a boundary.

  • 12:38 PM IST

Rahane needs to realise that there is serious competition for places at the moment. No one will raise a finger at him because he will be one of India’s key batters in the upcoming overseas tours but unlike others he hasn’t made opportunities count. He is the vice-captain of the side and needs to shoulder more responsibilities.

  • 12:27 PM IST

India lose Ajinkya Rahane after lunch. That was a terrible shot. Short and wide, Rahane looking to cut, plays it straight to the gully fielder. He has wasted another opportunity. Rahane should have played more sensibly.

OUT! Ajinkya Rahane c Dimuth Karunaratne b Dilruwan Perera 2 (15)

  • 11:32 AM IST

400 up for India. It’s lunch. The lead reads 199. Kohli looks set for his fifth double ton. Another session that has gone completely India’s way.

  • 11:27 AM IST

    Here’s more on Kohli’s hundred.

Check how he has now surpassed Gavaskar and Ponting.
  • 11:26 AM IST
At the stroke of lunch, India lose Pujara. Perhaps a lapse in concentration. Shanaka breaches Pujara’s defence. Rahane walks out.

OUT! Cheteshwar Pujara b Dasun Shanaka 143 (362)
  • 10:58 AM IST

And that’s Kohli’s 19th Test hundred. Another breezy affair. While Pujara has taken his time, the Indian skipper has been at his fluent best. It has just taken him 130 balls to reach the milestone. Amongst the active cricketers, only Alastair Cook (31), Hashim Amla (28), Steven Smith (21), AB de Villiers (21) and David Warner (20) have more hundreds than Kohli.

    Umag Pabari tweets:

Fewest innings to 3000 Test runs in India:

    53 – CHETESHWAR PUJARA*
    55 – Sachin Tendulkar
    56 – Mohammed Azharuddin
    59 – Virender Sehwag
  • 10:31 AM IST

Kohli gets 12 from the Lakmal over and moves to 90s. He has shown some positive intent.

  • 10:19 AM IST

Kohli looks well set for his 19th Test century. Meanwhile, Pujara has just completed 3,000 Test runs at home.

  • 9:57 AM IST

Almost half-an-hour into the first session of the third day’s play, Pujara scores a run with a controlled flick. It fetches him a run. It will be interesting to see how he paces his innings today.

  • 9:40 AM IST

After 100 overs, India are 313… Kohli strokes one beautifully through cover for a boundary.

  • 9:32 AM IST

Sunil Gavaskar points out that there are cracks in the driving region for batsmen. So will Herath come in handy? Let’s wait and watch. Gamage to start the proceedings of the day.

India-vs-Sri-Lanka

Hello and welcome to the live blog of Day 3 of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka. I am Suvajit Mustafi, and will bring all the live updates from Nagpur.

India took a lead of 107 runs on Day 2, courtesy Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara’s hundreds. They added 209 runs for the second wicket.

Playing in his first Test in 8 months, Vijay made full use of the opportunity and scored a resolute 128 off 121 deliveries, comprising 11 fours and a six. This was his 10th hundred — seventh at home and first against Sri Lanka. Given Shikhar Dhawan had to head home due to personal reasons, Vijay partnered KL Rahul in the opening department.

Pujara now has the second most hundreds since 2016. He levelled with Kohli’s seven hundred, and is only behind Steven Smith (eight hundreds). He remained unbeaten on 121*.

At the crease are Pujara and captain Virat Kohli who scored his 15th half-century. They have already stitched up 96 runs for the second wicket. Sri Lanka used as many as five bowlers, but only two could produce breakthroughs.

India will look to add as many runs and take a sizable lead. And Kohli, of course, will aim to score another hundred.
