What display of emotions here. Joy for one, agony for the other. Meanwhile, Messi looks like he still can’t believe he missed the penalty. And the wait for Messi to win a major trophy with Argentina prolongs…

Well, Argentina were certainly the better team in regular time. That crucial save from Bravo to deny Messi a free-kick goal did matter at the end. It took the game till the penalties. Bravo turned out to be the superhero yet again this year! Messi and Biglia missed their penalties. And Argentina were denied another title. Chile can celebrate all-night long.

ARG 0-0 CHI: PENALTIES – OMG! Messi has missed his penalty! Over the bar!

ARG 0-0 CHI: PENALTIES – Saved! Romero saves! Advantage Argentina. Romero dives on the right!

ARG 0-0 CHI: PENALTIES – Vidal (Chile) will take the first penalty. Romero the keeper!

ARG 0-0 CHI: PENALTIES – The teams huddle up before the terrible and nervy penalties get under way!

ARG 0-0 CHI 120 mins, End of extra time: It is 0-0 at the end. We will have a penalty shoot out again this year to decide the Copa America Champions!

ARG 0-0 CHI 119 mins: Looks like we are heading for a Penalty shoot-out!

ARG 0-0 CHI 118 mins: Both teams going for long-balls but to no avail. Chile retain possession.

ARG 0-0 CHI 115 mins: Messi’s freekick takes a deflection off the well. Corner for Argentina. Chile clear it away but Argentina retain possession. Bravo gathers it though. Throws it quickly. Possession again back with Argentina.

ARG 0-0 CHI 113 mins : Heating up a little. Messi gets set to take the free-kick.

ARG 0-0 CHI 112 mins : Corner for Argentina. Cleared but Argentina retain the ball. Freeekick for Argentina now. MESSI territory! Just outside the box. Bravo vs Messi.

ARG 0-0 CHI: Change for Argentina – Ever Banega comes off for Erik Lamela

ARG 0-0 CHI: Change for Chile – Vargas comes off for Castillo! Big gamble this. Meanwhile, Romero comes out of his box to kick the ball out of play. Could have been a chance.

ARG 0-0 CHI: Play resumes in the second-half of extra time. Argentina get a corner. Messi takes it. Easily cleared by Chile. Possession with Chile.

ARG 0-0 CHI: End of First-half of extra time. That save from Bravo was just the highlight of this half. Came off the bar too.

ARG 0-0 CHI 104 mins: Another corner for Argentina, as Aguero puts pressure on the defender. Cleared. Change for Chile: Silva on for Sanchez. Sanchez did play well though in spite of injury. Coming towards the end of first-half extra time!

ARG 0-0 CHI 99 mins: Messi’s brilliant freekick is saved by Claudio Bravo. The corner is cleared by Chile. Now a Chile corner, which is also cleared. Game flowing from one end to the other quickly.

ARG 0-0 CHI 95 mins: There’s an early and lengthy stoppage in extra-time as Aranguiz comes out worse for wear after a 50-50 collision with Biglia. He was caught by the Argentina midfielder as he goes down for a second time tonight. Another yellow card now to Claudio Matías Kranevitter. Funes Mori catches Jara with a late challenge, getting his studs into the ankle of the opposing defender.

ARG 0-0 CHI 90+3 mins: Back the other way come Argentina through Messi, who goes all the way himself, but he can’t hit the target from atop the area! Two of the three added minutes have elapsed as the match beckons for extra-time. There will be 30 more minutes at MetLife! Stick around as the fun continues in this Copa Centenario final after a quick break for the players to collect themselves and grab a breather.

ARG 0-0 CHI 90 mins: Argentina win a free-kick on the far side, about seven yards away from the corner flag. Anticipation builds as bodies cram in the centre, but Banega’s delivery is a massive letdown, allowing Chile to clear their lines. THAT WAS THE CHANCE FOR CHILE! Oh my they’ve come so close to defending their title! They surge forward on the break with Beausejour making an exceptional run on the overlap.

ARG 0-0 CHI 85 mins: Following a decent spell from both sides it’s starting to fizzle out again, with the chance of extra-time now amplified. HORRIBLE MISS! Aguero takes a pass atop the area and rides out Jara’s challenge brilliantly to get into space for a shot, but he uncharacteristically skies his effort!

ARG 0-0 CHI 80 mins: Chile win a corner through Isla, but they’re unable to test Romero again, before a follow-up cross from Sanchez is sent straight into the keeper’s arms… and it gets worse for Chile a few seconds later as Alexis drops to the ground. It looks like Mercado got his knee into Sanchez’s thigh, which suggests a possible charley horse. The always energetic Edson Puch comes on to replace Fuenzalida in Chile’s first change of the night.

ARG 0-0 CHI 75 mins: Tensions are rising as the pressure mounts with just over 15 minutes left, as the possibility of extra-time looms larger. Any mistake would be magnified at this stage. It’s getting a bit stale.

ARG 0-0 CHI 70 mins: Another yellow card given to Mariano Aránguiz Sandoval. Messi is a bit lucky! Aranguiz is penalised and booked for a foul on the Barcelona forward, but the referee made the call, whereas the linesman closer to it didn’t deem it as a foul! Higuain had one look at goal tonight and squandered his chance. It’s another major final without a goal for the striker as he gives way to Sergio Kun Aguero for the final 20 minutes.

ARG 0-0 CHI 65 mins: The pace has picked up as we pass the hour mark, with both teams starting to adopt a more direct approach in possession. Sanchez and Messi, two vital attacking figures, are starting to get involved. DELICIOUS COUNTER! Chile break forward in numbers, through Sanchez, and they have Argentina caught out.

ARG 0-0 CHI 60 mins: WIDE! Despite holding over 55 per cent possession, that’s just the first shot of the night attempted by a Chile player. A well-worked move doesn’t quite come to fruition, but it comes out to Isla atop the area. HE’S NOT HAPPY! Di Maria is absolutely livid as he gives way here for the remainder of the match for Matias Kranevitter. Confident goalkeeping from Bravo who rises high to claim a corner amidst a mess of bodies in the center.

ARG 0-0 CHI 55 mins: It is raining yellow and red card at the moment that does not seem to stop. Emanuel Beausejour Coliqueo gets one. Chile have enjoyed the bulk of possession since the restart, but a sloppy giveaway invited Argentina on. Messi picks up the ball and drives straight at the Chile defence. Beausejour and Vidal, both on yellows, converge to take him to ground, and the referee is immediately swarmed by Albiceleste players who plead for a second yellow.

ARG 0-0 CHI 50 mins: There’s going to be a lot more space on the pitch, with two less players competing, which should lead to a lot more goal-mouth action in this second half. It will be very interesting to see how the approach changes for these two sides over the duration of the match. THE WHISTLE SAVES ARGENTINA! Chile press high up the pitch and win the ball, before sending a cross into the area for Sanchez. The winger knocks it into the centre where Mercado intervenes.

ARG 0-0 CHI 45 mins+ 5 mins: The tempo picks up a bit in stoppage time, but there’s little attacking quality to speak of. A careless giveaway at the back affords Alexis a chance to run through and pick out a cross, but a heavy touch from the forward sends the ball behind for a goal-kick. And half time it is now!

ARG 0-0 CHI 45 mins: Vidal finals pops up after getting some attention from the training staff. It was a nasty knock that he picked up, but it doesn’t look like it will force him off. The referee has made this all about him in the first half and it has to be said, he’s lost the plot. That’s a clear make-up call. Five minutes extra has been added and another red card given to Faustino Marcos Alberto Rojo.

ARG 0-0 CHI 40 mins: Two yellow cards now ro to Arturo Erasmo Vidal Pardo and Javier Alejandro Mascherano. Oh no this is not right, a yellow card to Messi! Messi goes down theatrically inside the area in an appeal for a penalty, but the referee is the wiser. Chile crowd around the Brazilian official as they ask for the Barcelona forward to be booked.

ARG 0-0 CHI 35 mins: Chile are growing frustrated, but they’ve done well to absorb any pressure Argentina have tried to muster up to this point. Argentina clear their lines following a Chile free-kick, before Fuenzalida catches Mascherano with a high boot. It was entirely accidental, but the Albiceleste midfielder takes exception.

ARG 0-0 CHI 30 mins: Argentina are playing in their third successive major final. Now it is a red card for Marcelo Alfonso Díaz Rojas after a warning given with the yellow card. CHILE DOWN TO 10 MEN! Diaz is caught flat-footed and stands his ground, obstructing the path of a surging Messi who drops to the ground. That’s an incredibly harsh decision by the referee. he whole scope of this final is changed now, with Chile surely set to come under a lot of pressure over the final hour following Diaz’s sending off.

ARG 0-0 CHI 25 mins: It’s coming to life again! Chile reply with an enticing move of their own, getting down the left-hand side before a clever switch of play presents Fuenzalida with a shooting chance inside the area. Chance this time, Medel slips at the back and it allows Higuain to pounce on a back-pass and sprint clean through on goal. THEY THOUGHT IT WAS IN! The Argentina fans on the far side of the stadium celebrate what they think is the opening goal, as Otamendi rises above Vidal to head a cross into the side-netting!

ARG 0-0 CHI 20 mins: If anyone’s allowed to have a shot from there – 30 yards out, just to the right of goal – it’s Messi. Everything but the finish! Di Maria gets on the end of a weak clearance as Argentina continue on the ascendancy. He shows excellent close control to dribble his way into the area.

ARG 0-0 CHI 15 mins: All three injured players are back on the pitch, though Aranguiz doesn’t look to be quite at 100 per cent as he’s tripped up by Mascherano at the halfway line – winning his side a free-kick – but he stays down for a few second. This is the second time in Copa America history that there is a rematch of the previous final. Argentina and Brazil played each other in the 2004 and 2007 finals. Yellow card already in the game to Marcelo Alfonso Díaz Rojas. After such a lively start to proceedings, it has developed into a rather choppy and physical affair.

ARG 0-0 CHI 10 mins: They’re dropping like flies! Di Maria shows quick feet to force Isla into a foul directly in front of the corner flag, but the Argentina winger comes out worse for wear as he stays on the ground clutching his knee. Misery loves company and that seems to be what’s happening here. The tempo has completely fizzled out with the slew of early injuries, and there’s another now for Chile as Charles Aranguiz goes down in obvious pain.

ARG 0-0 CHI 5 mins: FLYING START FROM ARGENTINA! They waste no time getting on the front foot, via a route one ball over the top, and Banega unleashes an effort inches wide. The tempo has been excellent in the early going. Both teams are pressing high up the pitch. A real worry for Chile as Alexis Sanchez goes down after rolling his ankle near the top of the penalty area.

Starting line-ups

Argentina: Romero, Rojo, Otamendi, Funes Mori, Mercado, Banega, Mascherano, Biglia, Messi, Higuain, Di Maria

Chile: Bravo, Beausejour, Medel, Jara, Isla, Vidal, Aranguiz, Diaz, Fuenzalida, Sanchez, Vargas

And so here we are, 20 days removed from Argentina’s 2-1 victory over Chile to open Group D, and the two proud nations come face to face again with everything on the line. It’s safe to say, regardless of who’s left celebrating after the final whistle, these sides have established themselves as the most deserving champions over the course of the last month.

Standing in their way are a Chile side who, after being humbled to the tune of a 2-1 defeat to Argentina in their opening match, have righted the ship under Juan Antonio Pizzi, looking much more dangerous and confident than they did three weeks ago, having grown in stature since the start of the tournament.
