Jonathan Trott remained unbeaten on 98 and Samit Patel hit his maiden fifty, as England set a 299 run target in their third ODI at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali.

Trott faced 116 balls during his knock of 98, which included nine boundaries.

Patel, who was promoted ahead of Jonathan Bairstow, made a quickfire 70 not out off 44 balls, which included seven fours and two sixes.

All three Indian fast bowlers Umesh Yadav, Praveen Kumar and R Vinay Kumar proved expensive giving 71, 56 and 64 runs respectively on a pitch which was expected to support pacers.

Kevin Pietersen and Trott revived England with their 101 run stand for the fourth wicket after the tourists made a shaky start.

Pietersen showed aggressive intent right from the start and hit nine boundaries for his 64 off 61 balls.

On the other hand, Trott provided a steady support, rotating the strike regularly and hitting boundaries on loose balls.

England skipper Alastair Cook once again failed to score when he was trapped in front of the wickets by R Vinay Kumar for three in the fourth over.

Craig Kieswetter opted to attack from one end and slammed two sixes and three boundaries for his 38-ball 36. But his quickfire innings came to an end when an inside edge off his bat went on to hit the stumps off Virat Kohli.

England were off to a slow start garnering just 18 runs in the first five overs.

Brief Scores: England 298 for 4 in 50 overs (Jonathan Trott 98*, Samit Patel 70*, Kevin Pietersen 64; Virat Kohli 1 for 20, Ravindra Jadeja 1 for 41 ) vs India.
