Manoj Tiwary’s half-century rescued India after initial blows as the hosts reached 111 for three at the end of 25th over against the West Indies in the fifth and the final ODI at the Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.

India were off to a disastrous start when West Indies pacer Kemar Roach struck in consecutive deliveries of the first over to send back opener Ajinkya Rahane and Parthiv Patel.

Gambhir and Tiwary then stitched an 83-run partnership for the third wicket to steady the innings.

Gambhir looked set for a big score before Anthony Martins had him LWB for 31 to have India reeling at 83 for three.

Tiwary was unbeaten on 63 while Virat Kohli was batting on 11 half way through.

Earlier, India’s stand-in captain Gambhir won the toss and opted to bat.

India rested Virender Sehwag and local boy Ravichandran Ashwin for the match, replacing them with Ajinkya Rahane ans Irfan Pathan. Pathan returns to the team after a gap of two years.

The West Indies replaced injured Ravi Rampaul and Danza Hyatt with Anthony Martin and Jason Mohammed.
