Maharashtra and Mumbai Cricket Association move to Supreme Court against shifting IPL matches
On April 13, Bombay High Court announced their verdict on shifting IPL 2016 matches within Maharashtra after April 30. Though, HC has allowed to play Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) to be held in Pune on May 1. Now with regards to further development on the story is that Mumbai and Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) has moved to Supreme Court going against High Court orders to hear their side on shifting of matches for IPL 2016. A joint plea was filed to SC regarding the IPL matches. The plea was mentioned before bench of Justices Dipak Misra and Shiva Kirti Singh by senior advocate Kapil Sibal which listed the matter for hearing on April 25. The cricket association in its plea said that it will not be using potable water for the cricket pitches but use treated sewage water instead. After April 30, a total of six in Pune, four in Mumbai and three in Nagpur were scheduled to be played. Bombay High Court which said in view of the grim water crunch in Maharashtra due to drought it would be better to shift the Indian Premier League matches outside the state. The three Nagpur matches scheduled for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), has been decided to be shifted to Dharamsala on Thursday, while MI have opted Jaipur as their venue. As for the six matches of Pune, it is scheduled to be held at Visakhapatnam, while the final has been slotted to be played at Bengaluru. Now with one of the match to be played in Pune itself, the rest five matches will be played on different venue. With regards to the drought issue, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh expressed their views and felt changing venue is not the solution. While KXIP skipper David Miller, was indifferent towards the issue.
The High Court’s direction had come despite an assurance by BCCI that IPL franchises of Mumbai and Pune had agreed to contribute Rs five crore to Chief Minister’s drought relief fund.
