Although his heroics went in vain, Marcus Stoinis played a gem of an innings at Auckland’s Eden Park, on Monday, in the first ODI of Chappell-Hadlee Trophy between New Zealand and Australia. However, reality bit him hard with a close run out in the end, ensuring Australia fell 6 runs short of the target. Stoinis surely has stamped his authority in international cricket with his heroics. He also put forth his all-round skills, as he picked three crucial wickets earlier in the day of Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson and Colin Munro. Although there was pain of narrowly missing victory, cricket fraternity and former Australian cricketers hailed Stoinis innings.

Stoinis had shown glimpses of his indomitable performance in IPL 2016 as well, where he provided victory to his franchise Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on numerous occasions. His first fifty and three important wickets of Quinton de Kock, Sanju Samson and Sam Billings in the 36th match of IPL proved to be a memorable moment for Stoinis. He was rewarded as Man of the Match then. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: New Zealand vs Australia, 1st ODI at Auckland

Stoinis continued his spirited innings against Mumbai Indians (MI) as well when he left them tottering at 124. He ended with figures of 4 for 15 picking Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Nitish Rana and Jos Buttler, in turn being awarded Man of the Match for the second time.

Stoinis, who went through mixed emotions post-match, spoke to ESPNcricinfo.com, If you look at the stat book after making 140-odd and taking three-for, it doesn’t feel that good. It just shows how much of a team game cricket is and how important winning is to everyone. I’m happy to an extent but probably not what I would imagine. As an all-round game, it’s what you dream of and think about when you close your eyes before the game. I’ve had smoother innings than this, but this is a different kind of pressure. To put the performance on the board feels good.
