Mark Greatbatch proves a point to Tony Greig

Back in December 1993, New Zealand were already one down in a Test series against Australia. What wasn’t helping them was Mark Greatbatch’s fielding, who was slow and was also dropping catches. The commentators, mainly Tony Greig, were very critical of him.

On the third day, Mark Waugh was looking in a sublime touch before he tried to cut a Chris Cairns ball. The ball cannoned off Waugh’s outside edge and seemed to zip to the third man boundary. However, Greatbatch at first slip leapt high and nabbed the ball with his right hand to complete a stunner. It didn’t end there. Greatbatch hit back at Greig, as he pointed the ball towards the commentary box, screaming, “Stick that up your arse.”

Richie Benaud, who was commentating, in his own witty way defended his colleague, as he remarked, “He is probably reminding them [press box] that he missed a couple earlier in this series.”
