New Zealand put up a decent score in the first Twenty20 International (T20I) of the two-match series against Sri Lanka, as Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson both scored half-centuries. After winning the toss, Sri Lanka sent the Black Caps to bat first and Guptill and Williamson opened the batting for their side. The first few overs went in favour of the New Zealand side as they put up quick runs, taking the team score to 100 in just 10.2 overs without losing a single wicket. It was Guptill’s run out that changed the course of the innings and Sri Lanka made a remarkable comeback with a commendable effort from the bowlers. Guptill scored a 34-ball 58 that which provided a good boost to their total. Full Scorecard: New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, 1st T20I at Mount Maunganui

After steadying things a bit with Colin Munro, Williamson also departed after hitting an important 53 off 42 and somehow the quick runs dried up. New Zealand went on losing a few wickets in quick succession. Corey Anderson’s comeback to the national side failed to make any prominent mark as he was dismissed for a mere 2. Runs started coming in singles only until Ross Taylor took the command. Starting off with a boundary, he went on to hit 3 fours and a six, scoring 22 off the 9 deliveries he faced. Another mentionable contribution came from Munro, who kept his nerves and held the innings together. New Zealand finally put up a good 182/4 in their 20 overs. Sri Lanka displayed some great piece of bowling. The best action came from Nuwan Kulasekara as he took two crucial wickets while Jeffrey Vandersay bagged one. The only flaw that was quite evident was Sri Lanka’s fielding. As many as three chances were put down by the Lankan fielders which could have really helped them restrict the target within 160.

Brief scores:

New Zealand 182 for 4 in 20 overs ( Martin Guptill 58, Kane Williamson 53; Nuwan Kulasekara 2 for 26) vs Sri Lanka
