Martin Guptill scored an unbeaten 189 (his second ton in as many matches) against England at Southampton in the second One Day International (ODI). New Zealand reached 359 for three in 50 overs.
Guptillâs 189 off 155 deliveries ensured New Zealand reached a competitive total. After Luke Ronchi fell for two off James Anderson, Guptill forged an important alliance of 120 along with Kane Williamson. Williamson scored 55 off 63 balls before being cleaned up by Graeme Swann. The New Zealand No 3 was hoodwinked by a spinning short delivery which he tried to hit hard and was foxed by the lack the speed of the delivery which was a tad slow.
His dismissal brought Ross Taylor in the middle. He took the attack to England scoring a quickfire 60 off 54 deliveries which included three boundaries and a couple of sixes. Guptill brought his fourth ODI hundred in the 37th over of the innings when he punched Jade Dernbach for a single. The back-to-back centuries from Guptill made him the third Kiwi to achieve this incredible feat after Mark Greatbatch (1990) and Ross Taylor (2011).
Brendon McCullum scored 40 off 19 balls and alongwith Guptill the duo added 118 off 50 balls for the fourth wicket. This was after Taylor-Guptill alliance of 109 for the third wicket.
Anderson was pick of the bowlers picking up two wickets for 65. Dernbach conceded 87 off his 10 overs.
Guptill went past the highest individual score in Southampton going past Hashim Amlaâs score of 150 scored last year.
Brief Scores:
New Zealand 359 for 3 in 50 overs (Martin Guptill 189*, Ross Taylor 60; James Anderson 2 for 65) vs England.
