Marco Jansen’s remarkable all-round performance in the ongoing Guwahati Test has placed him in an elite group of visiting players who have scored a fifty and taken a five-wicket haul in the same Test match on Indian soil since 2000. The South African left-armer, who has been in sensational form throughout the series, produced a memorable display that has put India under massive pressure.

Jansen slammed a crucial 93 runs in South Africa’s first innings, helping the Proteas reach a commanding total of 489. With the ball, he was even more devastating. The tall left-armer ripped through India’s batting lineup, returning 6/48, his best figures in Test cricket, as India were bowled out for 201.

This outstanding all-round effort places Jansen alongside only two other visiting players in the last 25 years to achieve this rare double in India:

Visiting players with 5-fer & 50-plus in a Test in India since 2000

  • Nicky Boje ( South Africa ) – Bengaluru, 2000
  • Jason Holder ( West Indies ) – Hyderabad, 2008
  • Marco Jansen ( South Africa ) – Guwahati, 2025

Jansen’s name now sits proudly beside these two accomplished all-rounders, highlighting just how special his performance has been.

Match-changing spell

On Day 3, Jansen’s relentless accuracy and steep bounce proved too much for the Indian batting order. Apart from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Washington Sundar, no Indian batter looked comfortable against him. His breakthroughs at crucial intervals ensured South Africa held complete control of the contest.

South Africa Tighten Their Grip

After securing a massive 288-run first-innings lead, South Africa ended Day 3 at 26 for no loss, stretching their overall lead to 314 runs with two full days left. Openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram looked solid at the crease, further strengthening the visitors position.
