As they lost after putting up a decent 161 for three, Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir said the score was defendable but Somerset batted exceptionally well to come out winners in their Champions League T20 opener, here today.

Somerset won with two balls to spare with South African Roelof van der Merwe top scoring with a 40-ball 73.

“I think we batted really well but Merwe took the game away from us. We were looking for a score of 145 but with that one over in which we got four sixes, we got a good score. It was very good total on this wicket but the way they batted all credit to Somerset,” Gambhir said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Gambhir hoped that they will do well in the remaining three Group stage matches.

“Kallis is a quality player. He is world class and Yusuf Pathan is also in good form. We have a lot of positives out of this match. If we get 160 in the next match, hopefully we will be able to defend,” Gambhir, who missed qualifying stage as he was recovering from concussion, said.

Winning captain Alfonso Thomas said the team was doing well as they have gelled together well and also praised KKR’s Pathan for his fiery knock.

“There is (self) belief in the team. We have been to finals and played some big matches. Certainly we will try to win this tournament,” he said.

Man-of-the-match Merwe also said the team has knit well and that’s reason for their success.

“It’s always good to play an innings like that. I am enjoying my stint at Somerset. There is family environment,” he said.

Asked if he sees chances of making a comeback to the South African national team on the back of improved batting, he said,”I am happy at Somerset. I have worked on my game, batted up the order and want to win games for Somerset.”(PTI)
