Bondi Beach shooting: More than 10 people, including two police officers, have been killed in a mass shooting in Sydney, Australia. Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan narrowly escaped the attack and recounted the terrifying experience on social media.

Michael Vaughan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Being locked in a restaurant in Bondi was scary… Now home safe .. but thanks so much to the emergency services and the guy who confronted the terrorist .. thoughts with all who have been affected.”

The incident occurred around 6:30-6:45 pm local time during the first day of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights. Eyewitnesses reported that two people, dressed in black, opened fire indiscriminately, with between 12 and 50 rounds fired. Hundreds of people were on the beach at the time.

At least 16 people were taken to hospital, while others were treated at the scene, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Police immediately launched an operation, detaining two suspects – one was shot by police, and the other arrested. The area has been cordoned off, with people advised to take shelter. Helicopters and ambulances have been deployed.
