Mitchell Starc quickest to 100 ODI wickets, breaks Saqlain Mushtaq’s record

Mitchell Starc created history when he became the quickest to 100 wickets in One-Day International (ODI) cricket, on Sunday, during the first game between Australia and Sri Lanka. Starc achieved the feat when he dismissed Dhananjaya de Silva in the 33rd over of the Sri Lankan innings at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Starc, who has been in a terrific form over the last one-and-a-half-years, has not only established himself as Australia’s leader of the pace attack but has also turned into one of the most dangerous bowlers in international cricket presently. In the recently-concluded three-Test series against Sri Lanka, Starc claimed as many as 24 wickets even though his side suffered a whitewash. Former Pakistan bowler Saqlain Mushtaq held the record of fastest to 100 wickets in ODI cricket, a feat which he had achieved on May 12, 1997 at Gwalior while playing against Sri Lanka.  At the second spot was former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond, who snaffled his 100th ODI wicket on January 23, 2007 playing against Australia at Adelaide. In the lead-up to the game on Sunday, the left-arm pacer Starc had played 51 ODIs, in which he had claimed 98 wickets at an average of 19.79 and his strike rate being 24.60. Starc has so far played 28 Tests, in which he has 115 Test wickets and 6 half-centuries. In 20 Twenty20 Internationals, the 26-year-old fast bowler has 26 wickets in his kitty.

In the recently-concluded Test series, Starc bettered the record set by Sir Richard Hadlee by becoming the highest wicket-taker a Test series in Asia while playing for an overseas team. However, Starc’s performance was not enough as his team was blanked 0-3 in the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy 2016.

The quickest Australian bowler to 100 ODI wickets was Brett Lee, who achieved the feat in his 55th one-dayer, against England in January 2003 at Melbourne.
