All India Women’s Selection Committee on Monday announced 15-man squad for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, which will be held in England between June 24 to July 23. As expected, Mithali Raj has been named captain. India Women also welcomed back Smriti Mandhana, but left-hand batters Devika Vaidya and Thirush Kamini did not find a place in the squad. Smriti last played a One-Day International (ODI) for India in November 2016. She also participated in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), along with Harmanpreet Kaur, where she found a lot of success. Smriti however did not make the cut for the ongoing Quadrangular series between India, South Africa, Ireland and Zimbabwe. Devika is part of the Indian squad for the Quadrangular series and just played just the warm-up match against Zimbabwe Women, in which she did not get an opportunity to bat. However, in the ongoing Quadrangular series, India have been dominant. They have won all four matches in the tournament so far and sit pretty at the top of the table with 18 points. Hosts South Africa are their closest competition as they have 14 points from four games. India Women will look to end the series with a win and head to the World Cup with some momentum.

Before this series, skipper Mithali led India to a win in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Sri Lanka. India beat South Africa in a nail-biting final by one wicket off the final ball. India nevertheless are in excellent form having completed a whitewash over Sri Lanka and West Indies at home ahead of the Qualifiers. READ: Jhulan has made the art of fast bowling seem cool again
