Former India skipper Mohammad Azhaurddin in a recent felicitation function organised by Hyderabad State Veterans’ Cricket Association stated that VVS Laxman is the best cricketer produced by the state. “Everybody says VVS [Laxman] plays like Azharuddin. The truth is, it is Azhar who plays like VVS. Laxman is the best cricketer the state has ever produced,” Azharuddin was quoted as saying by Deccan Chronicle. Former Test and Ranji Trophy cricketers were felicitated at the ‘Cricket Carnival’ organised at Thapar Stadium in Secunderabad on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Laxman said, “This was a great opportunity to meet not only our contemporaries, but also selectors and coaches. This doesn’t happen quite as often as it should. We should meet once a year, learn from each other and work for the growth of cricket.”

The event was organised by HSVCA President captain Manohar Sharma, as part of his 75th birthday celebrations. Cricketers were presented a commemorative jersey.

Along with Azharuddin and Laxman, Venkatapathy Raju, Arshad Ayub , Noel David, were also part of the event. Former selector Lokender Raj, who picked the Ranji winning team in 1987, was felicitated.

Ranji Trophy cricketers who were felicitated are Vijay Mohan Raj, Noshir Mehta, Rajesh Yadav, Ehtesham, B Mohan, D Maheshwar Singh, RA Swaroop, Arvind Shetty, Abdul Azeem, Dilip Reddy, Shashank Nag, PM Rangaraj, Abdul Bari Wahab, Youraj Singh, M Srinivas, Chetan Joshi, Moses Nithyanand, Prahlad, Jyoti Prasad, and current players Akshath Reddy and Ahmed Quadri.
