After interruptions in the match due to smog, Mohammed Shami provided India with a wicket off the first ball of the Sri Lankan innings. Earlier, India were forced to declare their innings for 536 for 7. Sri Lanka cricketers turned up with masks in the second session due to ‘bad air quality’.

Sri Lanka put up 18 for 2 before tea was taken, trailing India by 518. Dilruwan Perera (12*) and Angelo Mathews (4*) remained unbeaten.

Sri Lanka came back from lunch with fielders wearing masks. Lahiru Gamage and Suranga Lakmal had to go off the field, feeling uneasy due to the weather conditions. Indian cricketers, especially Virat Kohli, did not seem happy with the regular interruption. After the first interruption, Ravichandran Ashwin was removed by Gamage. Sri Lanka cricketers, led by skipper Dinesh Chandmal, kept on appealing to the umpires to stop the game. After a few interruptions, as play resumed, Kohli was dismissed LBW by Lakshan Sandakan for 243. Sandakan was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka with a four-for.

The matter further complicated when Sri Lanka fielded only 10 players. India coach Ravi Shastri had walked out in the middle to talk to the umpires, while later Nic Pothas walked up to the umpires to speak to the umpires. Looking at the situation, Kohli called Ravindra Jadeja (5*) and Wriddhiman Saha (9*) back to declare the innings.

India took field without mask. Shami got rid of Dimuth Karunaratne off the first ball, producing an edge. This was the first time since 2009 that an Indian bowlers got a wicket off the first ball. Soon after, Ishant Sharma dismissed Dhananjaya de Silva LBW.
