Chairman of selectors MSK Prasad has hinted that a few regular Indian players will be rested for the Ranji Trophy 2016-17 knockout stages, which begins from December 23. India, of late, have had many injury concerns. The likes of Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami, Wriddhiman Saha, Ajinkya Rahane and Jayant Yadav have suffered injuries during different stages of the ongoing India versus England Test series. The ongoing Chennai Test ends on Tuesday and with that both teams will have a 25-day break ahead of the One-Day International (ODI) and T20I series, which commences from January 15. The tour finally comes to an end on February 1.

Although Prasad is not really concerned about the injury concerns, he feels that it would be unfair on the selectors part to ask them to play in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final after a grueling five-Test series against England. They have been playing for quite some time. It’s part of the game. There is nothing much to worry about it,” he told Times of India. “I’m not sure, we haven’t still decided about it. The players have been playing for quite some time now. So I think it will be unfair on our part to expect them to play in the quarter-finals. But we will think about it,” he added.

Former India trainer Ramji Srinivasan also gave his opinion on the why these injuries are occurring. “It could well be due to too much of cricket. Another thing is when mind and body sync well, a lot of things are taken care of. Some more recovery protocols may be added. Nutrition and different weather conditions too can cause injuries. The people in the Indian team are professionals and they know what they are doing.

India have taken an unassailable 3-0 lead in the in the five-Test series, going into the final Test at Chennai.
