Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live coverage of Day 3 of the Group B match of the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy between Mumbai and Punjab, live from Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The hosts overhauled Punjab’s total of 154 with ease on Day Two, scoring 495 for 6 and piling up a huge lead of 341 by stumps. With 4 wickets still in hand, they would be aiming to bat Punjab out of the match on Day Three. Punjab has been as good as out-batted off the match; their only hope lies in saving an innings defeat on a pitch the Mumbai batsmen have feasted upon. As of now, things look ominous for Punjab, for Mumbai captain Aditya Tare is at the crease with a 140-ball 111, as is a well-set Dhawal Kulkarni with 30. None of the Punjab bowlers seemed to have any impact whatsoever on the Mumbai batsmen, who scored at 4.41 an over.

Live Cricket Score Punjab 244/4 | Overs 77 | Batting: Mandeep Singh 82(133), Himanshu Chawla 31(56): Stumps have been called for the day with Mumbai the clear favourites to win the match. Some Punjab batsmen responded well under pressure including Manan Vohra who is batting on 82 but they’ll need a really big collective effort to stall innings defeat on the final day.

Live Cricket Score Punjab 209/4 | Overs 69 | Batting: Mandeep Singh 75(119), Himanshu Chawla 3(22): Jiwanjot succumbed to the nervous nineties getting out for 91 to the run out mode of dismissal. Yuvraj Singh suffered another flop getting bowled while on 14 runs. Akhil Herwadkar had the honour of dismissing the one time India star. Punjab still trail by over 200 runs and have lost four wickets already.

Live Cricket Score Punjab 162/2 | Overs 53 | Batting: Jiwanjot Singh 81(155), Mandeep Singh 55(84): This is turning out to be a threatening partnership for Mumbai. The message is clear; the batsmen are not going to be overtly defensive and will play their natural games. It’s worked well for them so far and if this partnership isn’t broken by stumps Mumbai will be under pressure.

Live Cricket Score Punjab 108/2 | Overs 39 | Batting: Jiwanjot Singh 61(118), Mandeep Singh 21(37): Punjab are in dire requirement of a massive partnership here, they have to bat out this entire session after which they have another three sessions to bat out tomorrow if they’re looking to avoid an innings defeat. Mumbai will be happy about the proceedings so far but they’ll be hoping to get at least another two wickets today.

Live Cricket Score Punjab 68/1 | Overs 25 | Batting: Jiwanjot Singh 44(76), Uday Kaul 18(59): Punjab have been quite steady following the loss of Manan Vohra’s wicket. They need to keep battling like this if they are to have a chance at saving themselves the disgrace of an innings defeat. Jiwanhot Singh has moved towards a fifty while Kaul has scored 18 runs.

Live Cricket Score Punjab 44/1 | Overs 16 | Batting: Jiwanjot Singh 27 (45), Uday Kaul 11 (36): Punjab have batted out 16 overs with the loss of a single wicket so far. They need to continue at this rate for long if they are to save themselves the disgrace of an innings defeat. They’re still trailing by a good 371 runs.

Live Cricket Score Mumbai 569/8 decl. | Overs 124 | Batting: Aditya Tare 137(172), Harmeet Singh 14(16): Mumbai’s gigantic innings comes to an end by way of declaration. It was a fantastic effort by young Shreyas Iyer early on to smash a 175-ball 200. That effort was well backed by Aditya Tare who scored an unbeaten 137 at a more composed pace. The lead is of 415 runs and Punjab has a tough task to try and obtain a draw in the game.

Live Cricket Score Mumbai 537/8 | Overs 119 | Batting: Aditya Tare 119 (154), Harmeet Singh 0 (4): The lead has swelled to a mammoth 383 runs and Mumbai are in a position to go for an innings victory. Punjab’s chances of victory are zilch. Punjab will look to play for a draw when it’s their turn to bat. Meanwhile, Tare has played a fine knock and his focus will be to score runs at a quick rate.

The star of the day, of course, was Shreyas Iyer, who raced to a 175-ball double-hundred before holing out off Yuvraj Singh off a round 200. Shreyas registered the third-fastest double-hundred in Ranji Trophy (and the fourth-fastest in an Indian); his 200 was scored out of a mere 313 Mumbai managed during his stay at the crease.

Barring Shreyas and Tare, Mumbai were also buoyed by a patient Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 78 in a stand of 233 with Shreyas. The only face-saving performance from Punjab came from Brainder Sran, whose 3 for 87 helped the tourists put up some resistance. It was a disappointing bowling performance for Punjab after being skittled out for 154 against Shardul Thakur (4 for 47) and Balwinder Sandhu (4 for 31).

Punjab, however, can rest hope on their batsmen Yuvraj, Manan Vohra, Jiwanjot Singh, Uday Kaul, and Mandeep Singh: will the big guns be able to save innings defeat?
