After facing losses in each of their opening matches, Mumbai Indians (MI) and Southern Express clash in a must-win match at Raipur on Sunday night. The Express had nothing much in their control as rain forced them to play a 10-over match. Mumbai, on the other hand, produced a sloppy performance with the bat which couldn’t hide behind their good bowling which kept the match interesting. Catch the Live Blog of the match here

The defending champions looked out of sorts, similar to the way they floundered in the UAE-leg of IPL 2014. After losing three wickets early on, the Mumbai batting never got going and ended up crawling to 135. Their bowlers put up a collective effort to keep the match hanging in the balance till Umar Akmal saw Lahore home.

They will have to address their problems with the top-order, though they don’t have enough resources to change the team. Michael Hussey at the top was supposed to add solidity along with Lendl Simmons, but neither player could do much. Mumbai will contemplate bringing in Corey Anderson for Hussey.

The Express are a different side and they are unlikely to post a big challenge to Mumbai like Lahore did. On paper, Mumbai are much stronger than Express. Also, it will be one of those matches where the Express will play against a bowler — their captain Lasith Malinga no less — who is an integral part of the team in their domestic league.

The Southern Express did not look like a top quality side in their short match against Northern Districts. There is too much dependence on selected players. One of them is Kusal Perera. His exquisite timing is a delight to watch. While other formats require collective effort, in T20 a single brisk innings can change the equation. Their bowling looked a bit weak with Dilruwan Perera and Seekkuge Prasanna the spinners being hit for runs.

As far as the pitch is concerned, it was a little bit sticky, and the ball might not come on to the bat nicely. Hence, whenever the quicks took the pace off the ball it became difficult to hit the big shots. Some of them bowled at full throttle only to seeing the bowl carted all around. Someone like Farveez Maharoof is a clever bowler in these conditions. It’s a lesson to take for both teams ahead of the match. Catch the Live streaming of CLT2014 on and startsports live.
