New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine announces ODI retirement after upcoming Women’s World Cup

New Zealand women's cricket team captain Sophie Devine is set to retire from ODIs after the conclusion of the World Cup.

New Zealand women’s team skipper and all-rounder Sophie Devine is all set to retire from the ODIs following the World Cup which will be hosted in India and Sri Lanka later this year.

Sophie Devine is considered as one of the best all-rounder in Women’s cricket. She has scored 3990 runs from the 152 ODIs at an average of 31.66 which includes eight centuries. She has also amassed 3431 runs in146 T20Is with one century. The 35-year-old has grabbed 107 and 119 wickets in the ODIs and T20Is respectively.

“It feels like the right time for me to start stepping away. I feel very fortunate to have NZC’s support in finding a solution that means I can still give to the WHITE FERNS,” said Devine in a statement issued by New Zealand Cricket on Tuesday.

She decided to retire following the ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka and the decision came after after Devine took a break from cricket to prioritise her Mental Health in January. She will be leading the team in the ODI World Cup in September.

Devine was appointed as the full-time captain of the White Ferns in 2020 and has since guided the team to significant achievements, including a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and their first-ever ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title last year.
