Nicholas Pooran announces retirement from International cricket
West Indies star batsman Nicholas Pooran has surprised everyone with his decision as the 29-year-old left-handed batsman has announced his retirement from international cricket. He is considered as the finest T20 batter, he has player the most T20 International matches for West Indies. He is also the highest run scorer for his team in this format.
Pooran announced his retirement through an Instagram post. Pooran wrote,”After much thought and reflection, I’ve decided to announce my retirement from international Cricket.”
He further added,”This game we love has given and will continue to give so much – joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies. Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field… it’s hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.”
This left-handed batsman has played 61 ODIs and 106 T20 Internationals. Pooran made his T20 International debut for West Indies in 2016 and then made his ODI debut in 2019. He scored 1983 runs in ODIs at an average of 39.66 and strike rate is 99.15. He scored three centuries and 11 half centuries in ODIs.
Pooran scored 2275 runs in T20 International, after 97 innings, his strike rate was 136.39. This included 13 half centuries.
Nicholas Pooran also captained the West Indies team in his career. However, out of the 30 international matches played under his captaincy, West Indies managed to win only 8 matches. Under his captaincy, the West Indies team was eliminated in the first round of the 2022 T20 World Cup, following which he decided to step down from captaincy.
