Mahendra Singh Dhoni credits his friend Santosh Lal, as the inventor of the Helicopter shot, but undoubtedly it has been popularised by the Indian captain himself. The shot was named so in a Pepsi commercial featuring Dhoni and it’s something that he has perfected, as he often plays very effectively.

This year’s edition of Big Bash League (BBL) saw England batsman Kevin Pietersen playing the shot in the opening match. Pietersen, who is already known for his improvising batting, moved outside the off-stump and flicked the ball on the leg-side.  He checked his shot and despite the lack-of follow-through, the ball sailed for a six. And the world got to witness KP’s version of the helicopter shot!

Pietersen, who is sacked by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), scored a fine 66 off 46 balls. Pietersen has amassed 8181 Test runs and 4440 One-Day International (ODI) runs, and is one of the greatest cricketers England have ever produced.

It’s truly a shame that a batsman of his calibre isn’t playing international cricket.
