In a touching message, Uttar Pradesh wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel thanked his parents for supporting his profession and assured them that “this is just the start” after receiving his first call-up to the Indian side.

The 16-man Indian team for the opening two Test matches against England was revealed by the Men’s Selection Committee on Friday. Fans got a further surprise when Dhruv’s name was added to the list with wicketkeeper-batters KL Rahul and KS Bharat.

Dhruv embraced (X) and expressed gratitude to his parents for giving up everything so that “their boy could hold a bat”.

Additionally, he stated that “abhi bohot naam kaamana hai” (had to earn a name for myself) and that this is just the beginning of his career.

It will be an understatement to say thank you. For all the sacrifices my mother and father have made, so that their kid could handle a bat and merely play cricket. This is just the beginning, I swear. Mother, father, and child are all gone. Jurel tweeted, “Aur abhi bohot naam kamaana hai.”

As a finisher for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL), Jurel amassed 152 runs at an average of 21.71 with a strike rate of over 172 in 13 games. His best score was 34*. He was the star of the death overs because of his shotmaking.

Jurel has participated in 23 matches since making his T20 format debut in 2021. He has scored 244 runs in 19 innings at an average of 20.33, with a career-best score of 34* and a strike rate of 137.07.

Additionally, Jurel has scored 790 runs at an average of 46.47 in 15 First-Class (FC) games, including five fifty-fives and a century in 19 innings. His highest rating is 249. In domestic cricket, Jurel is Uttar Pradesh’s representative.

During the 2021–22 Ranji Trophy, Jurel made his FC debut, amassing 158 runs at an average of 26.33 across seven innings in five games, including two half-centuries. In the subsequent Ranji season, he performed better, amassing 429 runs at an average of 71.50 over six matches and seven innings, including a century and fifty. His highest rating was 249.

In the 2020 U19 World Cup, Jurel also played for India, who finished second behind Bangladesh. Serving as Priyam Garg’s deputy, he amassed 89 runs at an average of 44.50 over three innings, including one fifty.

He has featured in 10 List-A games, scoring 189 runs in seven innings at an average of 47.25 with two half-centuries. This year, Jurel made his List-A debut for India A in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Emerging Cup. India finished the competition as runners-up to Pakistan, with Jurel making 31 runs in three innings.

India and England will play a five-match Test series, with the opening game scheduled for January 25 in Hyderabad.
