Former Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews was ruled out of the opening Test against Pakistan, scheduled to get underway at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on September 28. Cricbuzz reported that Mathews has sustained a grade one tear to his calf muscle, which he suffered during a training session.

Mathews has been quite injury prone of late, and has been in and out of the team for the past few months owing to multiple injuries. He also had earlier torn his calf muscle in August 2016, during an ODI tie against visitors Australia, ruling him out of the series. Mathews also missed the following two-Test series against Zimbabwe a couple of months later. In January 2017, he suffered a hamstring injury during the tour of South Africa, and was later diagnosed with the resurfacing of the calf injury, ruling him out of the Bangladesh tour.

Mathews’s injury cannot have come at the wrong time, especially when his team is going through a tough phase, following a 0-9 tour whitewash at the hands of India in home.
