Sri Lanka won the toss and batted first, reaching 227 for 4 at stumps on the opening day. Opener Dimuth Karunaratne top-scored with 93 and added 100 for the fourth wicket with skipper Dinesh Chandimal (60*) to lift their team from a precarious 61 for 3. Chandimal was given leg-before to Yasir Shah on 42, but the decision was overturned on review. His innings has included 6 fours so far.

After Karunaratne fell, Niroshan Dickwella joined Chandimal and remained unbeaten on 42 at end of day. For Pakistan Yasir took 2 for 59. Yasir also scalped his 150th Test wicket in the process. He became the joint second-fastest in history to reach the feat, along with Waqar Younis: both men have reached their in their 27th Tests.
