Preity Zinta’s PBKS star likely to return for India in Asia Cup and West Indies Test series

India’s regular ODI player Shreyas Iyer is also set to return to T20I and Tests. According to a Times of India report, the aggressive Mumbai batter will likely be selected for India’s Asia Cup squad (scheduled from September 9 to 28) and its two-match home Test series against West Indies scheduled for October 2 to 14.

“We need Iyer’s class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It’s something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four Tests – two each against West Indies and South Africa,” sources told TOI.

Iyer last played a Test match in February 2024. He has scored 811 runs in 24 innings at a 36.86 average, including one century and five fifties. Despite not having scored a half-century in his last seven Test appearances, he has been in excellent form domestically. In just seven innings, Iyer scored 480 runs for Mumbai in the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy, an average of 68.57 and strike rate of 90.2.

Over the last two seasons, Shreyas Iyer has consistently performed in the IPL, leading him to a strong case for a comeback despite not playing a T20I since early 2024. Both with the bat and as a captain, the 30-year-old had a significant impact — leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their first title in ten years in 2024, and Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final in 2025, where they narrowly fell short of Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Shreyas Iyer has been in excellent form with the bat in the last two IPL seasons, averaging 45.48 runs in 31 innings and striking at 163.5. It is expected that he will prove to be a valuable asset to India in familiar subcontinental conditions as he can handle spin and accelerate during the middle overs at the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
