After the boys claimed NZC’s 2016/17 National Primary School Cup, the girls of Heaton Normal Intermediate have lifted the National Primary School Shield on a sunny Bert Sutcliffe Oval the first time in history that the same school has won both the Cup and Shield for national cricket supremacy. Heaton Normal Intermediate has now won the Shield four times in the last five years. Heaton Normal and Auckland’s Viscount School had both headed into the penultimate round unbeaten, however Heaton set a good total that turned out to be slightly too much of an ask for Viscount. Viscount went on to end the tournament in second place, while Tauranga Intermediate pushed ahead of their Otago rivals, Weston School, into third.

Weston finished fourth, Raroa Intermediate fifth, and Central Districts Havelock North Intermediate ended in sixth place. Heaton s Georgia Edge was named Player of the Tournament after having made 160 runs and taking seven wickets. Heaton was not the only school to pick up a double, however: Raroa was given the Spirit of Cricket Award for both tournaments.

This week now brings the first of the annual Secondary School finals to Lincoln, the NZCT Secondary School Girls’ Finals getting underway this Friday (2 December 2016) and finishing on Sunday (4 December). The Secondary School Boys’ First XI Cup starts on 5 December.
