Shoaib Akhtar has lent his opinion about the current spot-fixing scam in Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2017, claiming that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have saved the likes of Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif from imprisonment despite their guilt. Both Sharjeel and Khalid were suspended post the scandal. They were also sent back to Pakistan from UAE, where the current edition of PSL is approaching its business end. Shoaib lashed out in particular at PCB’s-anti corruption board, voicing that there been indications of corruption, the unit in question should have stepped in and stopped it earlier, saving PSL from eventual disgrace. Talking to Zee News, Shoaib said, “PCB’s anti-corruption unit is made up of incapable people. If a stranger had approached these two players in their hotel, then the anti-corruption unit should have been able to stop this. These two players, because of their stupidity, brought a bad name to the PSL. PCB has saved both players [Sharjeel and Latif] from imprisonment. PSL fixing case should be resolved as per the law and should be investigated thoroughly [for future as well].”

“I don’t know but if Sharjeel and Khalid are pleading not guilty now and if the board has charge sheet them and appoint a commission to probe the matter than I get a feeling perhaps the ACU head overreacted and made a mistake by sending the players home,” Shoaib had earlier said to Geo TV on the matter. “I don’t understand if like the board has been saying if the evidence and material against the two is so strong that they were suspended than why are they pleading not guilty and have decided to fight the case,” he had opined.
