India s chairman of selectors Krishnamachari Srikkanth was pleased with the performance of R Ashwin in India s five-wicket win against the West Indies as said the young spinner has a bright future ahead of him.

The selectors gambled on a youngster in place of Harbhajan Singh, a veteran of 98 Tests and over 400 wickets, and it seemed to have paid off.

“I m extremely happy with the performance, particularly of the youngsters,” Srikkanth said.

“It was an ideal start to the series and I m pleased with the work of the spinners.”

“Ojha and Ashwin bowled with responsibility. I m pleased with Ashwin because it was important that we fought back in the second innings after conceding a huge lead in the first innings. He showed tremendous fighting spirit. The youngsters performances augur well for India.”

Ojha claimed six wickets in his 12th Test while Ashwin won the man-of-the-match award for his nine-wicket haul in his debut Test.

Srikkanth said the best thing about Ashwin s bowling is the variation he possesses.

“He is a very intelligent bowler and the variety in his bowling always helps his bowling. It keeps the batsmen guessing.”

Srikkanth, however refrained from speaking on the Australia tour.

“I would not like to talk about what can happen in the future but I see the qualities in Ashwin to go a long way in Indian cricket. I see a bright future for him,” Srikkanth said.
