Off-spinner Swarupam Purkayastha was wrecker-in-chief with a match haul of 13 wickets as Assam humiliated Hyderabad by an innings and 56 runs on the fifth and final day of their Ranji Trophy Group C cricket encounter on Friday.
After posting 393 in their first innings, Assam ripped through Hyderabad’s line-up twice to clinch the match with a bonus point. The visitors had bowled out Hyderabad for 215 in the first innings. Following on, the home team, overnight 21 for one, crumbled miserably on the final day to be bowled out for 122.
Purkayastha was the stand-out performer, picking up eight wickets in the home side’s second innings. He bowled at an awe-inspiring rate of one run an over in his 29 overs, 16 of which were maiden. For Hyderabad, Hanuma Vihari’s 24 was the highest individual score.
