Kerala were struggling at 194 for 8 at stumps on the first day of their Ranji Trophy 2016-17 Group C match against Chhattisgarh on Thursday. Karaparambil Monish was batting on 19 and Sandeep Warrier was on 4 not out when the stumps were drawn on the first day of this round of India s premier domestic cricket competition. The Group C match being played at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur saw only 65 overs being bowled on the opening day, wherein Chhattisgarh bowlers Pankaj Rao and Sumit Sureshrao Ruikar claiming three wickets each to put their side in the commanding position very early into the game.

Kerala had a poor outing on the first day after winning the toss as none of their batsmen, barring their skipper Rohan Prem could make any difference to the scorecard. Prem top scored for Kerala with 62 off 117 balls, during which he slammed 8 boundaries and 2 sixes, but no other batsman could make any sort of impact. In fact, only four batsmen from the Kerala team were able to cross the double digits while the others flopped, including their star of the previous victory, Iqbal Abdulla, who was dismissed for mere 4 runs in this innings.

Bhavin Thakkar faced 81 balls and struck 5 boundaries to score 33 runs, whereas Sanju Samson was rapid in his innings of 41 off 37 balls, studded with 6 boundaries and 2 sixes.

The Chhattisgarh team deployed five bowlers, and three of them were among the wicket-takers. Rao returned with the figures of 17-7-35-3, and Ruikar was impressive with the figures of 17-8-45-3. Pratik Sinha bowled 14 overs for 48 runs and 1 wicket, whereas Vishal Kushwah and Ajay Mandal remained wicketless in their spells.
