Even after losing early wickets, Gujarat got a competitive score on the board against Odisha on Day One of the quarter-final of Ranji Trophy 2016-17. Odisha won the toss at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur on Friday and captain Basant Mohanty elected to bowl first. Deepak Behera s early strikes got the team in a commanding position but Bhargav Merai, Chirag Gandhi and Rush Kalaria held the fort, helping their side to get to 197 for 6 at stumps of Day One. However, the match was stopped for a fair bit of time due to the condition of the pitch, reminding fans of the infamous India Sri Lanka Indore ODI of 1997

Samit Gohel and Priyank Kirit Panchal opened innings for Gujarat, only to fall early. Panchal, who was among the top performers in this season of Ranji Trophy, fell for 2 while Gohil soon followed for 4 runs, leaving Gujarat struggle at 9 for 2. Both the wickets went to Behera. Parthiv Patel came out to bat and was hit on his arm which increased the concern regarding the pitch already building in the minds of the players. After a mutual decision from both the sides, the umpires paused the game and the pitch was rolled. Play resumed after that.

Merai brought in some stability after the break, building up a brief partnership with Parthiv. This is when Mohanty came into action and removed the experienced Gujarat captain for 12. From 42 for 3, Gujarat soon glided to 68 for 5 as both Manpreet Juneja (7) and Rujul Bhatt (6) departed for single-digit scores. Merai departed for 31 but played the anchor and Gandhi was joined at the crease by Kalaria. The duo formed the most crucial partnership of the day, scoring individual half-centuries. At stumps, Gandhi remained unbeaten at 62 while Kalaria is playing on 59 and will resume for Gujarat on Day Two from 197 for 6.

For Odisha, Deepak Behera (3) and Basant Mohanty (2) were the most successful bowlers. Biplab Samantaray was the other bowler to have taken a wicket.

Brief scores:

Gujarat 197 for 6 (Bhargav Merai 31, Chirag Gandhi 62*, Rush Kalaria 59*; Deepak Behera 3 for 36, Basant Mohanty 2 for 48) vs Odisha.
