Kerala scored 188 for 8 against Andhra on Day One of the Round 7, Ranji Trophy 2016-17. After winning the toss, Andhra captain Hanuma Vihari invited Kerala to bat first at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. Given the track had something to offer for the bowlers, the decision paid off, as Andhra pacers went all guns blazing to keep the opposition batsmen at bay. Amidst all this, Kerala wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammed Azharuddeen scored a resolute 82 to steady the stinking ship. He took as many as 201 balls, batting for 275 minutes. His innings was studded with 12 delightful boundaries in bowler-friendly conditions.

All the same, Paidikalva Vijaykumar was the star of Day One. He ran through the batting line-up and took 6 for 37. He was disciplined right from the word go, bowling in the right channel with utmost consistency. On the other hand, Kerala captain Rohan Prem played a crucial knock of 42 off 131, including six boundaries. He added 71 for the fifth wicket with Azharuddeen and kept his side in the hunt. Later, the Azharuddeen stitched up a vital 47-run stand with Iqbal Abdulla, who scored 27. With 2 more wickets to go, Kerala will look to add as many runs in the first session of Day Two.
