Assam trail by 410 runs with 7 wickets remaining against Maharashtra, in the first innings. It is a crucial encounter for both the teams, for the Round 7 of the Ranji Trophy 2016-17. All the same, Day Two belonged to Maharashtra, as speedster Anupam Sanklecha picked up three crucial wickets to restrict Assam to 132 for 3. However, Rishav Das, against all the odds, put up a resilient show and stayed unbeaten on 53, with wicketkeeper-batsman Kunal Saikia unbeaten at 38. After choosing to bat first, Maharashtra added 542 all-out on the scoreboard. As the track was a featherbed for the batsman, Maharashtra line-up made sure they make full use of the conditions and dented Assam’s spirit. Captain Swapil Gugale started off with an 81-ball half-century, laying a solid foundation for the middle order. However, the resurgence began for the third wicket between Naushad Shaikh and Kedar Jadhav. They added 183 and set the scoreboard on fire. But the star of show was Jadhav, scoring 115 off 106. Meanwhile, Shaikh missed his century by 3 runs.

Chirag Khurana later smashed an unbeaten 112 to put Maharashtra in a commanding position.
