Vidarbha won the first match of Ranji Trophy 2016-17 as they faced Saurashtra in Round 7 of the domestic tournament. The match was played at the Karnail Singh Stadium, New Delhi. In the first innings, Saurashtra had put up 301 runs in reply to which Vidarbha scored 347, bagging a 47-run lead. In the second innings, Saurashtra could only put up 189 and Vidarbha’s Sanjay Ramaswamy and Ganesh Satish scored individual fifties to ease their way to get the required runs. Though Snell Patel contributed with a good 40 at the top, it was Sheldon Jackson’s 116 and Chirag Jani’s 78 which were the highlights of Saurashtra’s 301-run innings. Rajneesh Gurbani was the highest wicket-taker for Vidarbha in the innings with 4 wickets. In reply, Vidarbha openers Sanjay Ramaswamy and Faiz Fazal built up the most crucial partnership of the innings. Ramaswamy added 77 runs to the scorecard while Fazal remained unlucky being six runs short to get his century. Jitesh Sharma’s 49 in the middle-order added more to the team’s scorecard as they reached 347 at the end of their innings with a 46-run lead. Vandit Jivrajani was the highest wicket-taker for Saurashtra in the innings with his 4-for.

Saurashtra batted again but this time could only score 189 with Snell Patel being the highest run-getter for the side with his 62-run innings. Mohammad Azhar Shaikh bagged 4 wickets while Akshay Wakhare got 3 and Vidarbha needed 143 runs to win. It was the contribution from Ramaswamy and Satish that took them to an 8-wicket win.
