Maharashtra beat Assam by an innings and 52 runs at Chennai’s Indian Institute of Technology Chemplast Ground, in Round 7 of Ranji Trophy 2016-17. ‘Win the toss, choose to bat first’ is any team’s norm if the curators dish out a belter of a track. Maharashtra captain Swapnil Gugale did no different, looking to post a mammoth total on the scoreboard. For the matter, the captain led from the front and scored a resounding 50, laying a strong foundation for the middle order. The duo of Naushad Shaikh and Kedar Jadhav added 183 runs for the third wicket, setting the scoreboard on fire. While Shaikh fell short of 3 runs to reach the three-figure mark, Jadhav took only 106 balls to plunder 115 runs inclusive of 18 boundaries. The run-fest continued as No. 6 batsman Chirag Khurana scored an unbeaten 112 to take Maharashtra to 542 all-out. For Assam, Mrinmoy Dutta and Abu Nechim took a three-for each. In reply, Assam managed to score only 256 all-out, thanks to Anupam Sanklecha took 8 wickets his career best.

Maharashtra, without giving it a second thought, enforced follow-on. And the result was the same: Assam was bowled out for yet another low score 234. Sanklecha, this time, took a four-for, earning a Man of the Match award on a track that was tailor-made for the batters.
