Odisha earned three crucial points against the former champions Karnataka, as their Group B match of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2016-17 ended in a tame draw at the Air Force Complex Ground in Palam, New Delhi. On the basis of the first-innings lead that Odisha took against Karnataka, three points were awarded to the team which batted extremely well in both their innings. In their second innings, Odisha were 63 for no loss when it was decided to call off the game, with Sandeep Pattanaik batting on 27 not out off 97 balls and Ranjit Singh reaching 35 not out off 96 balls. Both the openers hit four boundaries each.

In their first innings, Karnataka were bowled out for a paltry score of 179. Riding on the half-centuries from Biplab Samantray and Saurabh Rawat, the Odisha team was able to post 342 runs on the board with a huge lead of 163 runs in their first innings. The two batsmen added a record 106 runs for the seventh wicket, which is the best seventh-wicket stand for Odisha against Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy history. Half-way through the game, the only bright spot for Karnataka was the bowling performance of Shreyas Gopal, who returned with the figures of 27-4-75-5.

Karnataka replied strongly under pressure. Their wicketkeeper-batsman Chidambaram Gautam top scored with 95 off 240 balls with 5 boundaries and a six, which was his second fifty in the match. In Karnataka s first innings, Gautam had scored 84-ball 54. Gopal contributed with 77, which came off 130 balls and 4 boundaries.
