Haryana, put to bat by Himachal, had a field day as they ended the first day of their Round 8 of the Ranji Trophy 2016-17, at 237 for 3 at Valsad. A defiant unbeaten century by Guntashveer Singh was the highlight of the day for Haryana. Seamer Mohit Sharma joined Guntashveer and added 20 runs at the end of the day s play. Nitin Saini and Shubham Rohilla began the innings for Haryana. However, Rohilla was retired hurt playing on 2 and did not came out to bat for the remainder of the day. Saini and Guntashveer began with their rebuilding work, and by the 16th over, Haryana were through 50 runs. In no time, Saini and Singh added 91 runs for second wicket ahead of lunch break. Post lunch, Guntashveer was the first to get his fifty off 99 deliveries. Himachal heaved sigh of relief as they got their first breakthrough in form of Saini for 39 with Kanwar Abhinay taking his first wicket. Chaitanya Bishnoi entered at No. 4 and provided equal support to Guntashveer adding 51 runs for third wicket. When Guntashveer was on 61 and Bishnoi on 26, Abhinay once again provided a much-needed break for Himachal picking Bishnoi s wicket. Haryana were floating at 142 for 2, post which they headed for tea break at 150 for 2.

After 10 overs from tea break, Himachal s star of the day Abhinay provided their third wicket grabbing new batsman Rajat Paliwal for 25. Haryana s partnerships were being broken at regular intervals. With the entry of Mohit in the middle, Guntashveer secured his century before the end of day s play off 201 deliveries. Mohit added 20 on board to take Haryana at comfortable position. Meanwhile, a glance at the points table show Haryana placed at 3 with 22 points while Himachal are just below their opponents with 19 points. On Day Two, Himachal will aim to obtain quick wickets to begin with their batting display.
