In Round 9 of Ranji Trophy 2016-17, Goa went into stumps with their nose slightly ahead of Himachal Pradesh in Group C clash. Winning the toss, Goa elected to bat on a promising batting wicket. Riding on Sagun Kamat’s hundred, Goa got off to a good start but late onslaughts prevented them from taking early honours on Day One at Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai. Bipul Sharma was the stand out performer for his side with two scalps and ensured his team’s late comeback. Openers’ Sumiran Amonkar and Sagun Kamat gave Goa a good start. They were 47 for no loss before Akshay Chauhan struck for Himachal. Snehal Kauthankar came in at No. 3 and held his innings for some time. He looked confident for a big score but departed for 43.

Kauthankar added 70 for the second wicket with Kamat but Paras Dogra got the better of him before his half-century. Goa’s top-order continued to make merry as 95 runs were added between Kamat and Darshan Misal taking the scoreboard to 212 for 3. Nonetheless, Kamat’s breakthrough opened the doors for Himachal’s comeback. Kamat had done his job before getting out as he went for 104 off 251 balls. His innings consisted of 11 fours and 2 sixes and exhibited patience from his end. His wicket caused Goa’s slide as Reagan Pinto, Samar Dubhashi and Saurabh Bandekar left without getting into double digits.

Bipul Sharma’s twin strikes dented Goa’s progress who were going well till the last session of day’s play. However, they have a well-set batsman in form of Misal who is unbeaten at 68. The match is evenly poised due to Himachal’s late strikes and Goa will have to ensure their lower-order add vital runs before getting dismissed.

Brief scores:

Goa 260 for 6 (Sagun Kamat 104, Snehal Kauthankar 43, Darshan Misal 68*, Bipul Sharma 37 for 2) vs Himachal Pradesh.
