The 84th edition of Ranji Trophy 2017-18 began with Group A witnessing two matches on Day One. The match between Maharashtra and Hyderabad did not take place due to heavy rains.

In the second match between Railways and Uttar Pradesh, few managed to score in double digits. While opener Saurabh Wakaskar was off to a decent start, not many could capitalise on the laid foundation. Uttar Pradesh s Ankit Rajpoot and Zeeshan Ansari s 3-wicket hauls bundled out Railways cheaply. As for the spinners, Suresh Raina ended with figures of of 2 for 14 in his 6 overs. For Railways, Ashish Yadav s unbeaten fifty coupled with Nitin Bhille s 42 took them to a reasonable score of 182. In response, Uttar Pradesh trailed by 173. Openers Shivam Chaudhary and Himanshu Asnora remained unbeaten on 2 and 7 respectively.

Put to bat, Assam dominated Day One. Adding 33 runs for the opening wicket, Pallavkumar Das and Rishav Das nosed ahead. Delhi s Navdeep Saini handed the first breakthrough for his side. Soon, Pallavkumar also found his way to the hut, courtesy Nitish Rana. However, Ishant Sharma moved his magic wand and grasped wickets at regular intervals. Assam skipper Gokul Sharma almost fought a lone battle until he found an able support from Swarupam Purkayastha. Their fifties took Assam to a commendable score of 224. Ishant was the pick of bowlers ending the day with figures of 3 for 31.

Brief scores:

Railways 182 all out (Nitin Bhalle 42, Ashish Yadav 53; Ankit Rajpoot 3 for 30, Zeeshan Ansari 3 for 78, Suresh Raina 2 for 140) lead Uttar Pradesh 9 for no loss (Shivam Chaudhary 2*, Himanshu Asnora 7*) by 173 runs.
