Ranji Trophy Elite B

Fighting centuries from captain Sachin Baby and Vishnu Vinod helped Kerala avoid the threat of an innings defeat against Madhya Pradesh in their 2018-19 Ranji Trophy , Elite B, Round 4 clash on Friday. Resuming the Day 3 on 38/4 and with 227 runs still in arrears, the hosts were completely on the backfoot.

The dismissals of V Jagadeesh (26) and Sanju Samson (19) left them gasping at 100/6.

But Madhya Pradesh loosened their grip from thereon allowing Kerala to not only recover from the hopeless situation but also take the lead, finishing the day at 390/8. This was a vastly improved batting display from them after they were shot down for a meagre 63 in their first dig.

At the centre of their recovery were Sachin and Vinod. The pair came together with their side in a precarious state but showing nerves of steel, the duo went on to add 199 runs between them for the seventh wicket.

Sachin recorded his fifth first-class century and was out on 143 off 211, an innings laced with 14 fours and three sixes.

Vinod ended the day unbeaten on 155 off 226, his maiden first-class century and has so far struck 18 fours and a six.

At the close of play, Vinod had struck another good partnership and this time with No. 10 Basil Thampi who is unbeaten on 30 off 49.

With a 125-run lead, Kerala aren’t still out of the woods but will be hoping to give Madhya Pradesh a tough fight on the fourth and final day on Saturday.

Brief Scores: Kerala 63 and 390/8 (Vishnu Vinod 155*, Sachin Baby 143; Kuldeep Sen 3/63) lead Madhya Pradesh 328 by 125 runs
