Ranji Trophy 2018-19, Group A, round 5: Gujarat survive Railways scare

Railways came close to winning their first match of the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy but a defiant resistance from Gujarat s lower-order ensured that Mahesh Rawat and his team would have to remain contend with three points. Left-arm spinner Harsh Tyagi took 4 for 46 to send panic into the Gujarat camp but a stubborn effort from Rujul Bhatt and Chintan Gaja took Gujrat to 191 for 7 at stumps in Valsad.

Resuming the final day of their Group A tie, the match seemed to be heading towards a tame draw with Gujarat openers Kathan Patel and Priyank Panchal scoring half-centuries to put up an opening stand of over 100. But once Avinash Yadav removed both openers, and Tyagi took out the next four wickets, Railways sniffed a strong chance.

In addition to four wickets, Tyagi also effected a run out of Dhruv Raval. At 156 for 6, Railways smelled blood and went for the attack, which was negated by Bhatt and Gaja. Bhatt faced 29 deliveries to remain unbeaten on 0, while Gaja kept out 57 deliveries in which he scored just 5. In the final five overs, Railways grabbed one more wicket but Bhatt and Gaja saw them off till stumps.

Brief Scores: Railways 547/9 take first-innings lead against Gujarat 191 for 7 (Priyank Panchal 58; Harsh Tyagi 4 for 46) and 367 all out.
